I think this has been asked before, I just wanted to see your opinions.

scenario: You are out, forgot to pack a meal, your last meal was 3.5 hours ago, you will be home in 4 hours. You are cutting

What do you do:

1. Skip a meal
2. Have a cheat meal (Burger, or something similar).

Suppose there are no HEALTHY alternatives available, no salad, no nothing, you either skip or cheat (one of those 800 cals burgers or so)
 
It is always better to eat something...even a candy bar. Cannabalization of muscle may well occur, especially if dieting hard and pretty lean.

Try to choose as healthy as possible(best of what is available), eat and get home.

After this, simply get back on the diet horse and don't forget again!
 
bull....never ever should or could happen, if so, I've yet to see it........cheating isnt an option. There is ALWAYS a grocery storem if there is a resteraunt or fast food.....if there is a resteraunt, there is always salad and broiled chx or some sort of protein......OR there is always a gas station that has jerkey, peanuts or almonds, skim mlk......these threads are common, failing to prepare is preparing to fail....if it's a scheduled cheat meal, go for it......if you are bulking go for it, or if you train for shits and giggle, go for it........precontest, forget about it.

This is kindofa "unlikely" scenerio.....but given the choice, I'd cheat before skipping a meal. I wouldn't "over-indulge" though.......would try and keep the portions smaller.....basically just have enough to "hold me over" till my next healthful meal
 
Depends, can you handle the guilt, also do you get hypoglycemic after a while? If so then go ahead and eat something with protein and as low as possible in sugars and white starches. If you can stand it, there's nothing wrong with drinking some coffee and going a few hours.
 
If I am reading the post correctly, it has been 3.5 hrs. since eating, and it will be 4 more till next time you can eat "clean". 7 1/2 hrs, no way I go without something. :)
 
Yeah, I choose to forego this poll b/c those are 2 opposite ends of the spectrum and there's always middle ground. You can eat something that doesn't exactly follow your guidelines, but you don't have to "cheat your ass off" :p

i couldnt see a problem as long as youre not cheating all the time. i know once every week i eat a bunch of general tso's chicken, fried rice and a pork egg roll. i cant help it its too fuckin good. id rather have something in my stomach than nothing. i hate that hungry feeling and knowing that my muscles are beggin me for something. i can feel it when they arent repairing and id think something is better than nothing.

Well, assuming that you're out of food and you desperately need to eat... cheat food is better than no food.

However, this doesn't mean to "cheat you ass off".

Therefore if you fail to plan, you are doomed to fail.
 
Like QT said it would never happen, I'm so prepared at all times, I have extra food everywhere, in my purse, gym bag, office, other people's houses lol.

But if it were to happen for some funny reason, I would not skip a meal, me skipping a meal is pure torture for anyone in my presents. I turn into :evil: without food.

I would order a grilled chicken burger, tell them no sauce or toppings, and toss the bun.
 
Interesting, seems people would rather cheat than starve.

Agreed, you can always try and minimize the damage, but the message looks clear enough: Eat something, don't wait. Try and make as little damage as you can, but don't skip

Yeah, the damage will be much worse the leaner you are also. If for instance single digit bodyfat, the body wants to preserve fat stores as it is(internal program from early times, being chased by predators, running through endless deserts, etc.), and will quickly cannabalize existing muscle tissue in that long of a time.
 
Personally, I've found it easier to stay lean once you're lean..I have more cheat meals than when I was at a higher body fat. Some board members can confirm this...having seen me and my eating habits.
 
seriously....its a way of life now.....but you could def. find something.....salad and chx is in 99% of resteraunts....
 
I play it either way, depending on my need for fuel and the food choices available. Not eating is cheating also, and even readily available food choices have positive sides. I try and figure out what my body is telling my mind in each situation and go with it.

I agree 100% even in the worst situations you can find something some what healthy and don't have to make it a fuill on pig out.

tough choice. For me if i'm really hungry i'll eat something small til' I reach home or the gym to burn off those unwanted calories!
 
To all those people saying you HAVE to eat over a period of 7 hours or your body will "start eating away at itself", what happens when you sleep?

Most of you are WAY too paranoid about dieting.

That being said, I don't really care either way when talking about the original question. Junk food won't kill you, neither will missing a meal. I'd say it depends on how hungry you are and how many calories you've already consumed for the day in relation to how many you are supposed to.
 
Trust me.......you could easily go a fujll day without eating a thing and will not lose an ounce of earned muscle..........might feel weak and lethargic, but it will have NOOO effect........as will eating junk food all day for a day.............overall, it will do nothing.

Agreed. Will never happen where you HAVE to cheat.
 
Whole Roasted Chicken From The Supermarket, Chargrilled Chicken Slices, Rocket Or Washed Salad And Eat Like An Animal!!!!!

I agree with this if you have been on a steady program for a long time. Especially one meal, don't think it will do much damage to skip or to cheat.

I'd definitely cheat.
 
Cheat. I can't afford to skip a meal. I have to eat or I start to lose weight

the funniest thing is that the average person would look at this thread and think people like us are insane. i honestly can feel when my body is deprived so i would probably just cheat on my wife instead.

I keep bars on me just in case. I don't like bars, but will eat one to keep the good ole metabolism going.
 
I don"t skip meals!When its time to eat I"m eating the best thing I can find. Feeding the body is a must for me.I"m so use to eating every 2hrs that I wake up at night every 2hrs from hunger pain,so I eat around the clock.
 
I cheated today, well... just got extra hungry, damn EQ :) , instead of hittin the mcdonalds I drove past it and stopped at the Irving gas station, and got a roast beef on wheat and a quart of skim milk. ITs easy to get food, but if I had to decide, id cheat

by skiping a meal you are creating a larger deficit (you are not doing your self any favors, but no big deal as long as it does not happen on ragular basis), by cheating you are puting garbage in your body which will set you back.

I vote for skipping
