Sirius tops XM in new subscribers; Stern to get $220 million early stock payout

don't listen to the music much.
2 or 3 stations of stand up comedy bits that are hilarious, comedy all the time.
Howard Stern
CNBC
Bloomberg
ESPN
3 other sports talk stations
it's awesome.

and lestat, XM has racked up 6 million subscribers, w/o Stern. Stern will just help Sirius catch up.

I think that Howard Stern would turn off more subscribers than attract them.
Who buys satellite radio, I mean the target market?
I just dont see that many of his audience paying for it and I see the more affluent market paying not to support him by choosing XM.

I dont see satellite radio going anywhere beyond just a niche market. GSM/GPRS networks are going up like wildfire and they offer interactive data transfer with the internet. Its just going to be a matter of time before its perfected to where you pay one bill and get everything you want in terms of media and communications.

Stern turning off subscribers? You think that because they carry NFL, non NFL fans will NOT get Sirius?

Stern has had upwards of 20 million listeners during his peak, he has a SOLID base of around 4 million that will be loyal to the end and he makes new fans all the time.

Yeah, turn off the satellite radio target market. I seriously dont or havent around hung around someone that would be into Howard Stern I think since high school.
Everyone I know thinks he's a scumbag and annoying and definitely played out.

NFL is not polarizing, Stern is and I think that people who buy satellite radio are more educated and have more disposable income to invest in hardware and the monthly fee. More education equals less likely to listen to Howard Stern. Thats a fact jack. I dont see this hiccup in the trend continuing in favor of Sirius

And four million hardcore fans still wont even come close to paying the bills for the Howard Stern blunder deal. Do the math with how many subscribers and enrollment fees being paid. NOt even close to adding up

You are incredibly off on your statistics. In the most recent market data, Stern's audience was MORE educated and had a higher median income then ANY OTHER RADIO program. His show is #1 in the 25 to 55 age group, its not teenagers he appeals to.

People like my parents, who are fundamentalist Christian, hate him. People who strong conservative republicans hate him. I can only assume that since high school this is the type of crowd you have chosen to surround yourself with.

As for myself, I hang with a more moderate and liberal crowd. Highly educated types who do not try to legislate morality. Who do not give a shit what people do to their own bodies on their own time in the privacy of their own home.. and most importantly to this discussion, they don't judge someone for who/what they listen to and actually embrace a little honesty in a media world full of fake and contrived personas.

bill, your common sense is refreshing, but stern is actually a funny animal. he has the highest percentage of $100,000+ earners in his audience of any national radio personality.

also, I see poor people shopping at places buying $100 jeans who have no business being in there. people don't spend on the things they need, they spend on the things they want.

Stern will end up being a gamble, but the payoff is potentially there. sirius earns ~$150 per year in revenue (that's just subscription, not hardware sales) per subscriber. They paid Stern $500 million. If he brings over 4 million subscribers, Sirius will earn $600 million in revenue annually. Amazing huh.

He will never bring four million subscribers in and more importantly the ones he brings it will not likely be long term subscribers. People arent going to go to satellite radio b/c of Howard Stern in droves. Its just not going to happen and they still have to turn a profit and purchase other media and pay employees and overhead. Revenue in doesnt mean anything.
The real winner of the Howard Stern deal was XM for the free publicity. Everytime Sirius is mentioned so is XM as the larger more established company.
Satellite radio technologically will remain a niche market.
There are better cheaper ways beyond paying a subscription to be entertained.
Howard Stern is entertainment and did well in the radio medium b/c at the time there was not much competition. Nowadays the entertainment choices are nearly endless with technology. Stern fans are outgrowing him and a younger generation isnt interested in him. He is unsustainable as any real market force.
Sirius still only has 3.3 million subscribers, I doubt that covers the expense of people taking the time to sign them up for the subscription.
Mark my vote on the Stern deal as a huge business blunder. Time will only tell

Who still listens to radio anymore??

No, I dont hang out with Christians or Republicans that I know of. I dont ask them what their religion is or politics is anyhow, none of my business.
But people I talk to just roll their eyes at Howard Stern type of behavior.

Whoopee for you, you can ask your friends girlfriend if she likes a finger up her butt in front of your girlfriend like you do here on EF.

lol, you bought four million subscriptions. OK well, obviously every time Ive seen a Howard Stern whine about the FCC and how awesome he is on the interview shows discussing the transfer. I couldnt help but think who the hell is going to pay to hear this selfabsorbed windbag?

Im sure his show is better but his appearances hawking his satellite move in what was said was an annoying year long commercial have been dreadful.

Given the choices available with Satellite radio Id be curious as to how much you end up listening to him per week later on down the road.

SCREW YOU ALL, IM GOING TO BUY AN XM SUBSCRIPTION JUST TO SPITE YOU GUYS!

awesome bill! I own XM stock, not Sirius. It's a no brainer, first mover advantage, more/better deals with car manufacturers, almost twice as many subscribers, much closer to profitability, and right now the market values Sirius at $8.7 billion versus XM valued at $6.2 billion?! Crazy. Buy a subscription Bill, my stock will thank you!

I'll tell ya what though, I'm scared of those folks at Sirius. Don't wanna mess with Stern and Mel Karmazin. Stern will actually over time move to a producer role, bringing new talent in. He has two channels to himself, so 48 hours or so of programming per day. Crazy stuff Billy Boy!!!
