Single cable pulldowns

DR. NOE

Why do people used this piece of junk. Here's one thing that would improve the back on every weight trainer in the world. Take every single cable pulldown station out of all the gyms and replaced them with chinning bars. Every time I go to the gym, I see people doing lat pulldowns. Sometimes I see two or three people waiting to be next. Some of them can pull up to 1 1/2 their bodyweight for reps, yet you still see very few impressive backs. The reason is that pulldowns are just not hard to do. Take a 200 pound trainer who's using 300 pounds on the pulldown machine, strap 100 pounds to him and ask him to do a set of chins. He won't be able to do one. Take another guy who is chinning with 100 pounds hanging off him, and I guarantee you his back will be huge. I think people stay away from the chin up bar because they can't do many in the beginning, so they head for the cables. Humble yourself and stick with the chin ups, if its a rugged, muscular back that you are craving for. So do you do pulldowns or chin ups and do you agree with what I am saying. Soon I will post some pics of my back doing 90 pound chin ups, and you can judge for yourself.

you speak of your back as a separate entity. hehe.

keep in mind that most weight stacks give the illusion of being alot of weight, but the number lies. they should do away with the numbers on the pin loaded machines. maybe put colors or letters or pictures. can you imagine?

#1: how much you up to on the lat pulldown?
#2: the pink frog, man! im gettin strong.
#1: i'll say, im only doing the yellow butterfly, but i'll catch up to you!

LOL.:fro:

Your right, anytime pulleys are involved the weight you moved is not what you think it is.

YO! Heresy!
Lat pulldown is great! It has added mass to my lats better than chinning!

Lat is better than chinning bar

1st) You know how much pulling. True, the number MAY BE a bit off. But the number stays consitent. Not unlike your bodyweight that constantly fluctuates.

2nd) Strapping weight onto your belt just blows.

3rd) Try to do 1 arm chin up. On lat pulldown it it much safer since you are in upright sitting position, not sorta hanging from the chinning bar.

4rth) LAT pulldowns have worked great for strength and mass for me.

LAT PULLDOWN ROCKS. You just need to KNOW how to use it.

Hey many people dont squat correctly and thus only injure themselves and dont grow. What, remove the squat rack too?

yeh right.

i've been doing this recently...finishing off with some single arm lat pulldowns (after doing pullups) using a u-handle. you get a completely different feel and plus you can work each lat equally (i favor my right side with pullups)

Squat vs Leg press
Leg curl vs glute ham raise
One arm cable anything vs dbell or barbell row or chin
cable curl vs barbell or dbell curl

There is no comparison as to which one will make you grow more. Not the one that feels so good...the one that makes you grow is the one with the free weight!!!

I agree with b fold and Noe. All those cables and pulleys diminish the weight you are actually doing, and there is no stabilization required. HHHMMM just go bench on a smith while your at it. Yeah you get a nice pump and can move some weight, but try training for future gains not temporary pumps and ego's. Noe I'm not totally against the pulldown machine - it has its time and place just like everything else. But as far as which exercise is more effective - pullups and chins
