Sorry, but this is something the "poor" are paying less and less of each year. I, like MATT, despise the income tax, and I know that the $6,000/yr number is incorrect. While my wife and I were in school, we made a little over $18,000, and with the "earned income credit" due to our son, we received all plus more back. This is very common in the "poor" who statistically have more children than the more affluent. Not to mention each election passes with the politicians pandering to this group telling them about all the tax benefits that they will provide if put in office.

This is not a significant barrier to people bringing themselves up from "poverty", it is only a wall that prevents one from keeping what they earn.

The earned income credit is complete bullshit if you ask me. My uncle owns a trucking company and it is crazy to see all the employees that not only end up paying zero in taxes on their income, but get money back in the process. That is some crazy bullshit if you ask me.

My wife and I make at least 2 times what our parents made, and taxes are becoming more and more felt as our income climbs. This was not as noticable (we knew it, but not much) when we were first starting out.

We are both first generations to graduate from college, my wife on financial aid and mine, paid for by the sweat and sacrifice of my parents. If the laws were that restrictive, and I do agree that many laws are disincentives that aid in keeping people down, then why are we doing better than our parents? Why did my parents put me in private school for my whole life, even knowing that that cost would prevent them from acknowledging more of their earnings for personal pleasure? Why do I do the same for my son?

People are in the class that they are, more because they know and accept this status, than because society is preventing them from rising up.

I used to work for an event staffing company. The one owner in particular hasn't paid taxes in 8 years. Just hasn't filed a damn thing. He makes around $50-60K, I'd imagine.

If your parents could pay your way through college, you weren't poor. They may have worked three jobs, but they had enough to get you through. They had enough money to invest in your future, and still be able to eat.

I suspect that they were middle class, and I suspect you are. Maybe they weer on teh lower end, and you're on the higher end. You went to private school, now your son does? Have things really changed that much? (Not a flame just curious bro)

There is a lot of truth to your last point. People get used to being where they are. But this can be overcome. What is the benefit of having a large class of poor people, other than to keep as much money where it is already?

not necessarily true...his parents could have paid the "leftover amount" after considerable financial aid.

no matter what some people try to claim, poor people do get considerable financial aid packages in this country. i don't really buy the poverty excuse for not being able to go to college.

i have to admit to just avoiding paying income tax in 1996, when i was a self employed programmer. the IRS did send me some letters, which i ignored. i believe i may be "in the clear" now.

I took a self paced biology course in college and had the 12th highest score out of over 600 students and I didn't try as hard as I could. I made an A in every biology and math course that I took in college as well as an A in Chemistry. I made the Dean's list regularly. I score over 140 on I.Q. tests. I am considering taking the test to get into MENSA which I will probably qualify for. I would say that your statement about my intelligence was just a tad bit off, probably like your opinions on most matters.
