should I use neck pading for squating ..?

most people just call you a vagina for using it, and it doesnt make THAT much of a difference, but i find it hard to position the squat bar on my back properly with the bulkey pad on.

properly meaning its awkward and makes me angle my back weird,

id say do what works, a pad on a bar isnt goign to stop ur legs from growing

I use a pad, it helps. I don't care what people say, they don't have to live with my neck pain.

Ugh... We call those things Maxi-Pads.... Because they are for pussies!!! Grow a set and ditch the pad. If squatting hurts your neck, maybe you should deadlift more to build an Upper Back! Most of the fags at my gym who use those things are squatting in the Smith Machine and have traps like a girl.

what does using a "maxipad" have to do with building your legs?

i prefre being a rugged beat up tough SOB, but for most bodybuilders using/not using a pad has nothing to do with their goals

I guess Arnold & Franco where pussies then cause he and Franco used neck pads while squating.

If you put the bar down onto your middle traps and rear delts you won't need a pad. IMO you are carrying the bar way too high if you need padding on your neck.

Man.... I just knew I would get a rise out of you guys with the "maxipad" comment. I really don't understand how the pad actually helps. The only thing it has done for me is throw me out of my groove and make me fall forward. Most dorks I see using the pad are quarter squatting more weight than they have any business using and they have coat hanger shoulders. If you use squeeze your upper back and use your rear delts/traps like a "shelf" you shouldn't need a pad. And yes Arnold and Franco are Pussies :p

The maxi pad comment didn’t get a rise out of me, since I use pipe insulation, the grey foam pieces it slips over the bar and doesn’t affect my stance or form and you can barely see it. Your comment about us being pussies and fags got the rise. And you shouldn’t compare the dip shit in the gym to some of the users here, not all of us are dip shits. It’s kind of like saying “Only pussies use wrist straps” or “Only pussies wrap their knees”.

Sublimezw said it best: "but for most bodybuilders using/not using a pad has nothing to do with their goals"

I've squatted 800 without any neck pain.

I recently did an OLY squat of 592 with no pad or neck pain.

Where do you get this neck pain from???

To Trizo and/or anyone else whom I offended. I apologize. My comments were not intended to belittle anyone or their abilities, goals, or methods of training. Humor and sarcasm is hard to pick up over the internet, and that is all I was trying to acheive with my post.

i use something called the manta ray. it is hard plastic that snaps on the bar and is contoured to your traps/shoulders. I dont feel a thing. google it if interested.

I used to... but I just needed to find the right spot to put the bar. It doesn't hurt a bit if you place it correctly and use proper form. It takes a little fiddling, but you'll find it (she said).

i actually agree with this statement and its the only problem i have with the pad.

there was a huge PDF article posted in here a while back about "the perfect squat" that had a great description of the "squeezing the upper back" for flawless bar positioning

no lines whatsoever

Nothing against pads but I agree the real issue is about bar placement and also form. My experience:

Returning from a layoff one time I thought about using a pad and realized there must be something wrong with what I was doing. I went to iron asylum and watched lots of clips. It really helped to see were they placed the bar, and how they looked coming down and out of the hole. It's not just squeezing the shoulders together that helps. It's keeping your chest out and making sure your weight is on your heels so that the weight on the bar doesn't inch forward. Once you get the hang of distributing the weight correctly it becomes intuitive and won't feel the need for a pad. Plus you'll add mega pounds to your squat in just 6 weeks.

What this guy said. A pad feels awkward as hell to me. If the bar is positioned right it should be pretty comfortable even with heavy weight. If you like the pad though go for it, the real pussies are the stick legged dudes who don't do squats!

Exactly.

The pad raises your center of gravity making it harder to squat. That is why people can squat heavier with a low bar squat then they can with a high bar squat.

Ditch the pad. It is most definitely for pussies.

Not really. My GF used to do sets of 10 - 12 at 40 lbs over her body weight with out any pads as a beginner.

I can't think of any reason to use them. There's a sweet spot BELOW the neck which you'll never find with pads.

592 lbs, no pad.

Yes - absolutely agree...

Yup yup. You want the bar to rest on your trapz so it should be below your neck. If your using a straight-bar this should not be a problem. If your using an e-z bar, yes, this is tougher. Still, built up those trapz with shrugs or deadlifts which stimulate them, or, just squat and notice that your trapz are also in use, not just your legs [and abs..].

But again, its all about comfort. I say ditch it, but its totally subjective.
