Should I fire this guy because he bought his degree from the internet?

Hey guys, I posted this on another board and the verdict I got was to fire him. Since I've been lurking here for a while I thought I'd post it here for some more advice.

A couple years ago I hired a guy named Thomas as a senior tech for a small fitness center I run in California. He always seemed like a pretty competent worker. Thomas had great personal skills, came into work on-time, and pretty much completed projects better than any of the other techs in our facility. He seemed like a pretty intelligent guy, actually. I’ve even had dinner with his wife and young daughter on occasion. I generally consider him a friend.

The other day I invited him to my house to hang out and have a few drinks. At one point in the evening we were shooting the shit and talking about the worst things we’ve ever done in our lives. I regaled him with a tale about how I stole expensive clothes from department stores as a teenager and he told me about how he once sent explicit pictures of his cheating ex-girlfriend inserting a toothbrush into her ass to her parents. I laughed and passed him another drink.

I guess he was getting a little too tipsy because a little later he related a story about how he got his college degree in philosophy. We don’t require college degrees, but we generally hire and give greater pay to candidates with the degree over the candidate without one. Thomas said that he bought it off the internet for $450 from some website. Should I fire him because he bought his degree from the internet instead of attending a regular university?

What he did was pretty crooked. I think I might decide to fire him over this. If you were his employer what would you do?

if he's doing the job well and you and him get along, whats a piece of paper?..i agree with Pervis...However i would make a point to tell him your opinion on the matter, but i would do it in such a way as not to ruin the "environment" in your work place.

If you're stupid enough to fire him after he revealed this information to you in an impaired state, and you're saying he's competent in his job, then you deserve every lawsuit he brings down upon your ungrateful neck.

Paper doesn't matter if he's good at his job. I have a degree, but that doesn't mean that I'm a better employee than everyone who doesn't. Knowledge doesn't directly correlate to value in the job field. You can have all the knowledge in the world, but if you can't relate it to anything it doesn't matter. Would you want a competitive bb'er with no degree personal training you, or a guy with a masters who has never touched a weight?

Sends a list of prices of steroids. Unknowing person sends cash in the mail to address a thousand miles away. Unknowing person waits for said steroids. "Dealer" was never a dealer to begin with, or chose to make some quick cash and never sends promised products.

I'm having a slow night ... I did a phrase search on a random sentence out of his post and got a hit. Found word for word the same post in another forum.

I'm wondering if they're not banking on people clicking on the site out of sheer curiousity and the site dumps spyware or some crap like that into your computer ...

I´d rather have a medical sports expert, (these dont usually work in gyms) than someone who happens to be big.

I used to train in a "hardcore" gym with a lot of competitors and juicers. Most of them did not know the difference between their ass and a hole in the ground. They all thought you can expand your ribcage with exercises, that your skeleton gets wider from training and that full rom is bad for your joints.

I have never known a competitve guy who thought that dumbbell pullovers could expand your rib cage. What would qualify someone as a medical sports expert? Not every serious bb'er is a genius when it comes to weight training. I would much rahter have an advanced competitor train me than some guy who has a degree and weighs 180. Reading it in a book and being able to apply it aren't the same thing. That said, I do have a degree in exercise science and hold the CSCS which is as far as I know the toughest cert to get. I wouldn't trade in my ten years in the gym for my education though. Hands on is where you learn.
