anybody had these b4. if so can you describe the feeling. for the last 2 weeks when i run after my 2nd lap around the track, like midway down my shin starts hurting like a bitch. have been hoping it was just the winny or maybe muscle pump pain from being "on" but i'm not so sure. advice is very welcome

Let me just say that I know your pain. Terrible shin splints kept me from practice for most of my senior year of college. I only played games for 3 months. Major, major pain. Even to walk.

While your sitting @ your PC bring your toe up to touch your shin. Of course this movement is impossible but imagine it. While your sitting, bring your toes up to your shin and flex the muscle aside your shin. The quicker you develop this muscle, the quicker this shin splint will subside.

In the meantime I would advise getting a deep tissue massage and get out all those splints. This takes a lot of pain tolerance depending on the severity of your injury.

Good luck

thanks for the help bros. From Zero--thx i found an informative post by Mavy. sounds like i most def have shin splints :( i love running outside in the open air so this sucks. i hate treadmills, etc. makes me feel like a hamster :p oh wells guess its time to do the elliptical for a little while till they get better.

ice and rest them
do the strech that polish hammer gave
use the eliptical
i tried to train through my shin splints during indoor track season and ended up with stress fractures, which were even more painful
i spent the outdoor season in ice tubs and full of pain killers just to throw

sorry to hear that -

i got them really bad running cross country in high school - not fun.

ice & rest & good shoes

hope your legs are feeling better soon!

hey, I used to have bad shin splints, but I contrived this awkward exercise that helps prevent them for me now.

Go to the cable crossover machine and lower one of the handles to the lowest setting. Now stick your foot in the handle, toes facing away from the cord. Lean against a wall and contract your toes towards your shin (basically the opposite motion of any calf exercise).

Also, stretch the hell out of your calves, and if you do any direct calf work, use a full range of motion, stretching at the bottom.
