Shin Splints on Treadmill

Hey im on a cutting cycle (getting good results btw) and was doing morning cardio on the treadmill for 30 minutes first thing each morning Monday through Friday. I did the cardio no problem for the first 4 weeks. But on monday at week 5, I started my jog and got REALLY bad shin splint pain about 10 minutes into it and had to do a fast walk for the remainder of the time it hurt so damn BAD. It took a lot longer to burn the same number of calories.

How am I getting shin splints all of a sudden after 4 weeks?

I get them all the time on concrete outside but on the treadmilll I was fine for 4 weeks and then all of a sudden got them BAD. My shins have felt sore now for a couple days, I got them on Monday. The only thing I did different at the end of week 4 was have an extra cheat meal but I doubt that would make a difference.

thanks for opinions

Actually a fairly common occurance with many folks. I have my clients switch to a low impact cardio, like the bike, of eliptical where feet do not lift off the apparatus. The bike (recumbent) is a real good alternative.

If you are going to run, whether on concrete or the treadmill, make sure you stretch properly. Also, shoe selection is EXTREMELY important. It may be time for you to go running shoe shopping. :)

I recommend that you get a pair solely for running/jogging. And lift and perform other forms of cardio in another pair of sneakers.

A new pair of sneakers can make all the difference in the world. I used to run a lot and i would have to go and get new sneakers like every 3 months just so my shin splints wouldn't flare up.

I'd love to be able to use our treadmill up to an hour every day, I just can't, beats me up from the bottom of my feet up to the tops of my hips. I can do 20 minute or so a day, every day, but no more. The elliptical is a loathesome machine, but doesn't beat my joints up, as long as my wind holds up I can go on that thing forever.

I actually found the treadmill to be harder on me than walking outside.
