Watching an episode of WWI on the Military channel. Dealing with the German alliance with Austria-Hungary and characterizing it as a Teuton Vs. Slav race war in the East; The corpse being the Austro-hungarian empire. Apparently, in the Austro-Hungarian army it wasn't uncommon for "orders of the day" to be given in fifteen languages. I never knew about the Serbians engaging in a death march to Albania as opposed to surrendering to the Austro- Hungarians.

Serbians are territorial, proud people that wont surrender to nobody. Austro-Hungaria offered them Great Yugoslavia, but under austrian administration. Of course the Serbs are gonna refuse that and fight till every single one of them is dead. They went for that march through Albania to the Adriatic, put themselves together and went on the Greek fron where the french army helped them out too.

For ex. it doesnt matter what kind of problems the polish provinces of that time had with Russia, they still share the hatred towards the Germans and will stand together. So, with all this boiling, Serbias independance threatened by Austro-Hungaria is the perfect reason for Russia to enter war

yeah, and IMO it never stopped. After Russia was tore to pieces after the cold war was over, they had to break up Yugoslavia too, cause that was the last one left from the slavic military powers. You know how the Romans said - divide and rule

My roommate in college was Croatian so I actually paid attention to the Balkans. When the US intervened in Kosovo most didn't realize Milosovich was fighting a counter-insurgency. He was doing what you're supposed to do against insurgents but lost the "political lottery." I was actually opposed to the US intervention, the region need an eternal "Tito."

The US defending alies that soon become the enemy is nothing new it seems to be a partern in US history. During the Iran hostage situation in the 70's there alies were Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of the Iraq weapons were purchased from the US during this time. How did UN inspectors know what to look for when seatching Iraq for weapons the US just had the the reciepts on everything they had sold them.
