Serious question for serious times

I also thought I heard something mentioned of like a fine being imposed and a quicker streamlined process for those already here to become legal

When I enrolled Abby in public school I had to fill out a bunch of forms explaining what language was spoken primarily by myself and her in the home. I have a friend whose job is to teach these kids English as a second language, they go into kindergarten not knowing any English. This is how it plays out:

pregnant woman/family crosses the border undetected. Woman birth's kid in the US. Family remains in the US working under the table or buying an alias/fake paperwork. This continues until one of two things happen:

A. Family qualifies for some form of legal relief (U visa, marriage to a citizen, dreamers act, temporary protected status, citizen baby turns 18 and claims parents, etc). OR

5.) Mother/family member gets arrested or pulled over for whatever reason and it's discovered they are undocumented. Notice to appear in court is issued. If they don't appear a deportation order is issued. If they never arrive then they might remain undetected until they get caught/arrested again, once caught again they'll find the deportation order and they'll be detained and deported. If they did present themselves to court a deportation order will also be issued and they imediately get detained and removal proceedings start for their deportation. Since the child is a citizen the parent can chose to be deported with their child or arrange a caregiver in the US for child to remain in the country since they are citizens.

Trumps line of thinking is the following: Immigrants are willing to do anything and risk anything in order to secure their children's citizenship by birth, so let's take that right away for children of undocumented people.

Lets say he was one, its not something to insult him about, we should celebrate it.

I don't think he is one based on discussions I've seen on here, and even if he was, it isn't our business unless he wants to make it our business.

The problem I mention is the rampant use of homophobic and anti homosexual references. It seems like every post is calling someone a 'fgt' maybe I am getting old, but it isn't funny anymore, its the opposite, it isn't right. I know why we do it, because I used to do it. In my teens when I wanted to say something was stupid, I said "that is gay" or "you are so gay" When someone said their favorite color was pink, I'd say "what a fag!" it was very common. I didn't know any better.

Now I do, and I'd like to say that we can do better at EF. I am a little surprised that sort of divisive language is still tolerated on EF or hasn't been regulated to a separate forum. We moved out all the sex talk to between the sheets, we moved out the religious and political talk, why not move out all the homophobic talk as well? Better yet, why not get rid of it altogether. It really isn't that funny, and even if it was, can't we find a more creative, or smarter way to get the same laughs? If not, you need to try harder.

I agree with you totally.... and im not that old... and im far from gay.. but alot of the ignorance i have noticed from some people is surprising to me and is reminding me of another forum im not too active at anymore...that also has alot of racist posts in the unregulated section (chat section) and it makes me a little sick. but in a way it shows peoples character so i guess its not all bad, but id rather not see such ignorant posts, I expect better from EF TBH....
some do it out of habit i think, but some seem to push it past that also..

Well said. I agree that the there is unexpected upside in that it does serve as a bit of a litmus test for people's true character, but sometimes its just plain ignorance and no real ill will is intended. Once a discussion opens up on the topic you then get to see the true colors.

I brought it up because I've been a long term user of this board and it has been a great place over the years, but when you come back and the tone is all disparaging and negative, particularly to a few select groups, it is off putting. I figured I'd say something and share my thoughts, most people just leave altogether as there is usually isn't much that can be done, there will always be bigoted assholes, and I agree with miplank and others who basically say "you gotta learn to deal with this" that is true on some level, but you can always hope to do better.

pick3 is a good bro and understand, that alone gave me a sliver of hope.

ignorance for the sake of ignorance is irreverence.

additionally, everyone knows it's wrong...which precludes ignorance, as ignorance, by definition, is the state of knot knowing...
