Seminar Recording Devices ???

My husband is going to be attending a 3 day educational seminar, and they're going to be long days. I just think the note taking is going to fall apart ... Does anybody have any experience with something effective for recording stuff like this? That doesn't cost an arm and a leg

Maybe I'll just hire a stenographer to go with him for three days

Actually, I haven't had luck with the dictaphones (sp) if I'm not right next to the speaker. Sure, I do capture the sound, but it sounds like the teacher from Peanuts.
