How could you possibly miss this? I'll give you a guide.

When football teams are playing, particularly teams between conferences, someone saying "the XYZ conference is competitive" is most likely referring to football.

Similarly when basketball teams are playing, someone saying "the XYZ conference is competitive" is most likely referring to basketball.

Now if what you gather from this is: "there is no XYZ conference", then you've missed the point again.
