Hear me out on this.

Just last week at my school some kid kills himself by jumping in front of the train that goes past my building.

Now with this horrible act at VT, people are saying "Praying for those at VT." Well what good will those prayers do? I'm just wondering. You would think if prayer actually did anything then such an act would not have happened -- or it at least wouldn't have been nearly this bad.

Prayer is simply people thinking they can change events that in reality they can't. It is a form of self-reassurance -- that's it. So basically all one can do is HOPE. Prayer is a form of hope really. I obviously hoped this wouldn't happen, I hoped everyone was OK once I heard it occurred but they weren't. What is this 'God's' explanation for such an act and many acts across the world that occur every single day?

If there is a God, then there is much explaining for this divine being to do.

I feel awful for those who lost loved one's and I know what it feels like to do so. I hope they can find some peace after such an act has occurred -- but I cannot control that.

I know more people at VT than any other school so this has hit close to me as well.

I wasn't able to click on the link due to work restrictions, but it sounds like something terrible happened. Prayers imo offer comfort to oneself when there is nothing you can do. I prefer to say I will keep you in my thoughts..rather than I will say a prayer for you. Does prayer give hope or reassurrance someone is thinking about you?

It does and I understand that completely. What happened was outside my back window, behind my building, a train was coming by. A young man boarded the tracks in front of a train, stared the conductor in the eyes and turned his back. The train struck him and killed him. After the train had stopped -- which was a long distance -- a tarp was set up alongside the train for hundreds of yards because there was parts of him everywhere.

I am confused by this post -- if it is intended to be humorous I didn't catch it.

It was a disgruntled individual who didn't get help and wanted out -- just like the individual today. I think there is a thin line between someone who committs suicide and someone who is willing to harm others then kill themselves.

No. This is a separate incident that occurred right behind where I live. I see them as being very alike.

Now that I understand (sorry for that) I totally agree with you. It is suprising events like this in Virginia don't happen more often. Alot of crazy and sick people who need serious help out there.
