S. Segal 7th Dan Aikido

yah but it's a lot harder to do if the other person would really try tohurt you

You don't think the other person is trying to hurt him huh? See if you could take a try. I wonder if the results would be the same?

What a beautiful sport to watch, very graceful and fluid. I have never seen an Aikido practitioner in MMA action but as I watch I could see how you could use the arm to flip / drop your opponent and then throw your leg over and lay down into an armbar.

trojan horse, your name has not made you aware of its implication. you have been owned by steven seagal, and smiled while he owned you. this is not a personal attack on you, but you have fallen for the hype.

a true test of skill and style to to cross credit it against other arts or free fighting. a master of an art isnt that way against the rest of the world, only that art. that means they have mastered THAT art only and can dominate those who have lesser ranking.

it doesnt mean that they are super duper master of everyone they come across. but it does mean that they at least have a degree of skill that may allow an easier win...may...

as Aikido relies on fine motor skill, when the adrenaline pumps, it falls apart and the practitioner isnt trained against an aggressive partner. street life changes everything, and the mind can shut down the art through fear. I have seen aikido dudes start swinging when shit hits the fan, which shows me it was the aikido that won, it was the over hand right.

dont believe everything you 'see' on tv. it is context relative.

p.s, YARG! will be oblivious to stevens attacks while he wipes his ass on stevens hakama. YARG!="what is that noise? a mosquito? ahh, never mind, I will take a dump right here on this black curtain"...

I'd be happy to spar with Steven Segal
but I mean I think he's probubly a bit busy to spar with some nonfamous random martial artist he's never met
but maybe you can talk him into it
of course you have to understand, Aikido dosn't TRUELY have sparring so when you mention sparring he might get a little confused

the idea that anyone could think that first video was people trying to hurt him, is a bit depressing
or at the least, laughable

Well said. I've heard anecdotal stories of Aikido vs MT, Aikido vs Karate, and you can guess how they turned out.

And to those who don't know, one of the main aspects of an Aikido class is learning how to "accept" techniques. That is why everything looks fluid and effortless.

and Aikido is great for those wanting an active meditation, not an active self defence. tried it, and after nearly 4 months, failed to see how it could replace or even supplement my Muay Thai or CQC. I went back to the night club door to tell the other kick boxers/ boxers that they were very correct, but I had to try before I replied to their slamming of it. maybe I just prefer the harder and more confrontational styles, perhaps I dont want to divert the water, but force it back into itself?

now, if they had taught me to walk on water, then sweeeeet! I would be keen, jesus take that!

Agreed with most of your statement except for the part that you assume that I beleive the hype and that I was owned. True, your motor skills do decrease when adrenaline rises etc... True, he is the master of THAT art, True, a real artist is more versatile etc... I do not disagree. However; what people forget to understand is that Segal is versatile. You only see him displaying his Aikido skills here because it's an Aikido dojo. In fact, Segal has demonstrated that he utilizes many more forms of Martial Arts in addition to Aikido. His Aikido nonetheless is "Hollywood". He is still a very skilled artist in my opinion.

It's looks like Mexican Pro Wrestling. Segal has a vicious clothesline. Rumor has it that Judo Gene Lebell choked Segal to sleep on a movie set and made him shit his pants.

ah rumor.
what possible advantage does steven have to compete with other arts
in turnament or on the street
all he can do is lose face
why would judo gene and steve fight?????
steve would walk away if judo gene pushed it to the level of a street fight
why???
if he wins "you beat up an old man!!!!"
if he loses "you got beat by an old man!!!"
why compete????
who would he compete with???
what would he gain???
does tito want to do movies???
steven already does
why jeopardize his rep in competiton
it can only hurt him.
why dont bill goldberg or the rock compete
are they tough enough to when some mma matches?
would it help them make money???
ive used akido on the street with wrist locks and arm locks and chokes
i was a blue belt in akido
is it all i used???
not by a long shot but ive won fights using it

Pardon the cut and paste.

"...this took place on the set of "Out for Justice" where Segal was using a Brooklin accent and did a stick fight w/Dan Inasanto-who also tells this story. Well Segal was being a dick to the stuntmen, but that is his normal behavior according to them. Well he is talking about how bad he is and the stuntment say "Yeah, well we got this old guy back here who could choke you out!" and Segal stated that nobody coulod get close to him to choke him out he also had never heard of Judo Gene LeBell before that encounter. Well Gene came over and said that he could choke him out and and Segal said that he couldn't so Gene grabbed him real quick and started to choke him. Segal tapped and said that that wasn't fair he was talking and wasn't ready for Gene. So Uncle Gene waited for Segal to get "ready" and when he said that he was Gene grabbed him and started to choke him out and Segal coudln't do nothing w/the old guy. Well Gene was pissed off because Segal was being very rough for no reason on the stunt guys when doing the fight scenes w/them and was upset becuase Segal said he wasn't ready and wouldn't admit that Gene hooked him so as Uncle Gene would of put it "there is 2 ways to choke a person out, one way they go out nice and wake up ok, the other is they go out quick and they piss and crap on themselves" Gene did the latter! Then he drug Segal over to a closet and put him in there uncouncious. When he came to everybody was cracking up and he went and changed his clothes and fired Gene and his guys. Gene has not worked on another Segal Movie since."

Every story in life is a rumor. Every post you make and even your very existence is a rumor as I have only elitefitness.com's word that you exist.

People are often driven by ego. They don't always formulate a career cost/benefit analysis when their ego is threatened. Was your mind at work formulating a career cost/benefit analysis as you applied wrist locks, arm locks, and chokes in your street fights? Perhaps Segal thought he could break Labell's choke and he found different at the cost of consciousness. I take the story for what it is: a rumor with plausible basis. Gene Labell is know to have a fondness for putting guys to sleep.

got a link for that?

Google Lebell and Segal. It's all over the internet.

on top of that, the he dosn't compete because he has nothing to prove line is bs
this thread being started, reguardless of if Segal has something to prove or not, the thread starter has made a claim that isn't backed up by, reality
so that line dosn't wash, not that it normally would anyway but in this case it is doubly useless

not sure what you mean but what im saying is that he will never compete as it cannot help his carreer only hurt it
if he wins hes no better off than he is right now
if he loses he loses a lot

an yeah i searched and only found other forum rumors
and about 20 diff versions
most believable was he let gene get the choke to show his defense against it and got choked out
does this mean gene would have started at 10 feet away and achieved the same results
who knows
i know i love gene lebell
but this story is covered in non proof and told in a way to make in never provable as the official line is that judo gene has a gag order to never confirm or discuss this story
and also i read where the rumor was that gary busey beat him up and about 7 other incidents where he was roughed up on set
seems that steve gets whopped all the time according to these forums

sick and tired of the hatin on traditional MA

I dont even care if its made up, the image of segal shitting his pants is priceless. I read it twice just to have him relive it fresh in my mind again. anyway, hes a wife beater, so he aint all that tough, just a tard.

I still think he's pretty cool. Nobody's perfect. Yea, he is a master of Aikido so we've got to give him props on that alone. Stop knocking the man, he provides some entertainmet for us all especially his goofy/macho movie lines and his SouthWestern Indian attire.

sick and tired of the hatin on traditional MA

That's why I prefaced my post by saying it was a rumor. I don't think anyone here hates traditional martial arts. I think most of the posters believe traditional martial arts less effective in sport combat than sport combat martial arts. I also think many posters have a distaste for traditional martial artists who believe their style optimally combat effective. 'Traditional martial artists' is the key phrase. They have nothing against the traditional art itself, they have something against the attitude of some of the practitioners.

The same can be said of many BJJ and MMA guys. They don't seem to realize that not everyone takes up martial arts to become a killing machine. Some take up the martial art for the beauty of it's movements, fitness aspects, or use it as a social outlet.

I have always enjoyed his movies, and definately enjoyed the aikido vs the villians scenarios. but from personal experience, the risk is too great to try to pull that stuff off. Muay Thai has a better effectiveness, and fights fire with fire, from my personal experience. but he is still a wife beater, and I laugh thinking he shit his pants. karma

and have a laugh at the blurb for his energy drink:
lightning bolt energy drink ghay pervert by the sound of it.
There is no telling what will happen once you get his juices inside you!

yes, the BJJ newbs drive me crazy

I'm lucky that my inauguration into BJJ was at a completely open minded school. Everyone willingly helps everyone else and the chief instructor welcomes other grapplers and martial artists in and will often pick their brains trying to learn things from them. He started training with Judo guys who come occasionally to sharpen their newaza because he felt it would benefit his sweep and takedown game.

I've been to other BJJ schools and have found only one that is even slightly close to the open learning enviornment found at my school. I drive an hour and a half each way to attend because despite my efforts, I've found no school nearly as high quality in providing a caring, yet highly competitive learning enviornment.

The seems to tame the killing machine wannabes. They either disappear or adopt the general attitude. It's like being a member of a BJJ commune.

yah that is definatly a great school
maybe Judo guys have a possative effect on BJJ guys cus the place I go to is CJJ (no gi BJJ) and they have a Judo guy or three that come in fairly regularly and it's really open

I can't confirm the validity of anything in the video, but a guy has to wonder how in the fuck he got his 200-0 record in "MMA/Vale Tudo" LOL.

He obviously can't take a shot to the face.

He beat up a dork. Big whoop. Maybe he should kick the crap out of some guy in a wheelchair as an encore.

lol. I made a new thread regarding this vid. Yeah, the old dude looks like he's about 65 years old.

Regarding the Steven Seagal defending himself against students, it looks more like drills than freefighting. The "students" all seem very skilled in breakfalling, and I'll bet that both Steven and each student knows which techniques are going to be used for the "attack" and "counter" before they actually do the drills, and the students know exactly which breakfall to use.

Thats why I feel that Aikido is very suckful if it attempts to give the student reality based mindsets. too structured. good if you want to learn Aikido, but not if you want to learn self defense. just like video games and skills are good for hobby, not for actual war.

I dunno, not to be flipant but really, playing video games is going to be a great way to train for war eventually
not far frm that now
