Russel Crowe can't act worth a shit. Year he won Oscar for A Beautiful Mind, it was not exactly a strong field. What did he do? Win for acting like an old man at the end? That wasn't acting. That was makeup efforts.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Russell Crowe -- A Beautiful Mind {"John Nash"}
Sean Penn -- I Am Sam {"Sam Dawson"}
Will Smith -- Ali {"Muhammad Ali"}
* Denzel Washington -- Training Day {"Alonzo"}
Tom Wilkinson -- In the Bedroom {"Matt Fowler"}

Look at that. Who did he beat? Most people can't understand that Best Actor is not about the character they portray on screen on the character development. But it is about the actual craft of acting that is applied to make that character believeable.

Nothing about Crowe is believeable. I have seen cardboard boxes with more depth than he possesses.

He won the year before for Gladiator. He actually was nominated but didnt win because he mouthed off at the European Film Festival and dissed the Academy, so they gave it to Denzel.

He and Tom Hanks have been carrying Hollywood on their backs for the last 10 years. Hanks won in 1993 and 1994 for Philadelphia then Forrest Gump.

Exactly. And that was the only year he ever had a chance of winning on his acting craft. I didn't type in "could've". But that was the year he had the best chance of winning anything at all since the field was so poor.

Has he been not so great in some films - yes.

Everyone has - Gladiatior and Mind and CInderella Man - the performances are unreal
 
Billy Bob Thorton has been in some great films. That doesn't make him a great actor.

Crowe simply is medicore at his talent level. Nothing amazing, nothing remarkable, just plain. Anyone could have performed in those roles.

How made the comparison between a great film and a great actor......

You can dislike him all you like......his talent is recognized world wide...as demonstrated by the oscar and other awards.

It's all good though, I think Crowe is mediocre as well. Had a few good flicks, but overall I don't think he's anything special. I don't think he should have won best actor for Gladiator.
 
dude's got a bad temper, straight up. I've always been certain his was showing a lot of his real self in Romper Stomper and L.A. Confidential.
