Comparing A Beautiful Mind to Training Day is silly.... Denzel did a good job but Crowe played an extremely complicated character beautifully...some actors, like Julia Roberts for example, have no depth, it's always the same old Julia..but compare Gladiator Crowe to BMind Crowe.... impressive... Too bad he got robbed because he doesnt suck dick.

Never saw Beautiful Mind, but Gladiator was awesome. Training Day was a good movie too. Julia Roberts sucks, and the none of the guys in the new Oceans 11, except Garcia, seem cool enough to play the parts.

Just saw "A Beautiful Mind" yesterday.

He did a great job...

he was robbed, another great example of the guilty whiteman!!!!

Crowe is very good. But the best actor in Hollywood, imho, is Anthony Hopkins. Brad Pitt, despite the physique and the beefcake image is also quite a decent actor.

its very hard putting actors up agains each other, everyone of them has special skills that makes them thrilling and exciting. i sure glad i dont have to be the one judging them.

However, we can all agree tha Seagal is a shitty actor. Great aikidoka, shitty actor.
I have nothing but the highest respect for Mr Seagal as a person, for taking on the mob and winning, but he should stick to running dojos...

Awwwww, what a nice thing to say! Your use of political correctness is absolutely superb! :D

Crowe is AMAZING. Truly the best actor on the planet.

I also believe Mel Gibson is a great actor as well. I thought he did a great job in Braveheart and the Patriot.

Crowe fucking sucks ass. He is a shitty actor that has no respect for his craft by trying to impose 'himself' in each of his roles. Jesus, where did you fags learn art appreciation?

The man is on the same level as George Clooney. A pretty face, but no quality substance. You have to remember that an actor does NOT make the role... the role makes the actor. You could have put Michael Kane or Bruce Willis in the lead of Beautiful Mind and still have the same outcome. Put Crowe in the lead of Training Day and he would have given only laughable credibility at best.

WORD.

Crowe's performance in Beautiful Mind sucked. He just stumbled around and frowned. His performance was a good rendition of a stereotype.

much like Denzell did :)

That guy couldn't sell hard nozed gangbanger even if he grew up in compton. talk about not fitting the part. Denzell's demeanor and image is too intellectual to play that part.

That could be the case, then again one of the aspects of Denzell's character was that he was NOT suppose to be hardcore. He was a scared black man that hid behind his badge and women. Who let other people do his work. Hence the reason that he was in trouble out in Vegas and needed the money to pay the Russians off. A true hardcore banger would have been like "fuck that shit, they want a million from me gotta bring they ass to the hood and get their caps peeled back." He was literally shitting in his pants while trying to maintain a semblence of coolness as the deadline drew near.

He's no Tom Cruise is he???:D

well, It's really hard to see someone in a role when you've seen him in others. I guess psychologically I still see him as 'the hurricane' or some inspirational role. He has that look of wisdom.
That baby face look didn't help him either. He doesn't help me forget the other roles he's played. I think that is crucial in believability. And ultimately is a sign of a good actor to me.

Look at russell. He went from middle aged, grey haired, donut eating lab scientist in 'the insider' to buff, calm-minded, lion in gladiator, to a schizonphrenic in 'beautiful mind'. Not once did I see his other roles in those flicks respectively.
I think being a good actor has a lot to do with not only acting flexibility but also physical flexibility. Unless you are a stellar actor, seasoned over the years like hopkins.

my top pics:
Anthony Hopkins
Kevin Spacey
John Malcovich
Al Pacino
Marlon Brando

you guys missed the obvious, Russel Crow is known in hollywood as a huge asshole. That is why he lost, because he is so disliked.

I just find that Crowe could jump from being one character to another yet play each role completely different. I find some actors like Pacino and Cruise use the same methods no matter what movie they are acting in.

Crowe was great in A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, The Insider, L.A. Confidential, Mystery Alaska...

Actually, other actors i really enjoy are Kevin Spacey(The Usual Suspects) and Ed Norton (Primal Fear).

I do enjoy Ed Norton and Kevin Spacey as well. Tom Hanks is pretty much the Natural Born Actor. I don't think too many can get better than he.

I also think Brad Pitt is a phenominal actor. Too bad he is beautiful because that is usually what people only look at.

yeah I agree,
I guess that 's what they mean when they say russel is so unusual because he doesn't act 'hollywood'. He's a bit of an ahole and you can't smooch and get good parts/awards if you piss people off.
We also have to see the obvious fact that hollywood is very political. I've seen several movies where certain people shouldn't be playing in.

I like brad pitt too and you're right. I think people don't give him much credit. Past his looks at least.
I think he was really good in 'seven' and 'snatch' as the pikey. I think he's still learning because he runs in to the danger of playing the same characters. Which is a catch 22 because he's marketable that way. And we all know what hollywood is really about.

Which is no surprise, since he is dumb as a post.

Not so. I have met him before for a few hours on different days. He was working on his photography for the book on The Blacker House. He is actually quite bright. When you see him on interviews and spotlight shows, what you see is someone that is just exhibiting a lazy attitude towards Hollywood in general. As he once told me... "I don't really care what parts I play in movies, though I am picky about the roles, but once the movie is over, that part has ended. Which is why I do not live my life through my parts and roles. None of it is real."

Brad Pitt is a horrendous actor; good looks but that's about it. I see his name associated with a movie and I usually try to avoid it.

..........

Ed Norton was great in American History X....

although I ended up not liking the movie for some of the underlying messages I thought he did a great job and plays his roles well.

Crowe is a great actor. Watch LA Confidental...great flick with Kevin Spacey.

Denzell is awesome and training day was great but I stil think the Oscars were fucked up and they were looking for any excuse to give black actors credit.

Oh well...just my 2 cents.

Lords of the rings KICKED ASS and will ALWAYS KICK ASS.

LOTR was a good breath of fresh air. We need more fantasy period pieces. Done well...

What underlying themes did you not like in AmHX? Er, what kinds of underlying themes? I saw it more of a statement about current society. How ignorance leads to further ignorace and that doesn't help matters.
Soceity is a cruel mistress.

I just saw A Beautiful Mind this week. Awesome job by Crowe.........reminded me a lot of Rainman.

Wild! My bf and I rented it last night, we are going to finish watching it tonight, since I had to get home.

As much of as I saw last night was awesome and I can't wait to finish watching it tonight. I agree with Frakal, he was robbed!!

He is an above average actor, but as the Nature Boy said the reasons why he did not win the oscar is:

1) He probably has the biggest ego in Hollywood. He has been quoting saying that he is the greatest actor in the world and can "make shit sound good."

2) He is an asshole.

3) Denzel gave a better performance.

He's really an asshole? That's disappointing, I thought he just didnt tow the partyline. Denzel is one of my favorite actors, I just think Crowe's roll was harder to play and he played it very well. Brad Pitt is one of my fav actors as well, I like Ed Norton, Anthony Hopkins is a very impressive actor.

Ed Norton I agree, amazing actor. Plus I'm STILL laughing at the scene from Fight Club where he's saying "please don't hit me" to his boss after kicking his ass.....

I disagree, and you seem to disagree as well judging by your second statement. There are some roles that some actors can do much much better than others, and some that others can't even do at all.

You think anyone but Arnold could fit the role of Terminator? Brad Pitt in Spiderman? Martin Lawrence in Hannibal? Bruce Willis in A Beautiful Mind? No way man... you could put Anthony Hopkins in the dumbest fucking movie and he would still make it good - perfect example: Hearts in Atlantis.

Why do you think people fork out zillions of dollars to cast some guy in a movie? If any Joe Blow could do the role because "the role makes the actor," then why bother trying to get Arnold, Crowe, Damon, Friedman, Jones, etc?

Unless of course you mean something totally different by "the role makes the actor." =)

Tom Hanks rules. Apollo 13 and Cast Away are among my favorites done by him.

How can there be a thread on the best actor in Hollywood and no mention of Sean Penn?
no joke.
can you say Shanghai Surprise? :)
it was a surprise allright :Frlol:

Not really, man. People tend to label others as assholes out of jealousy or spite. I bet half the gym thinks you're an egotistical asshole just because you're bigger than they are. Half my programming class thought I was an asshole just because I finished the midterm in half the time they did, finished the final project the weekend it was assigned, and had close to 100% in the class with little to no effort - and I never even opened my fucking mouth!

Denzel(l) did well in Training Day, but A Beautiful Mind was so much more "complete" and thought-provoking than Training "Yo Nigga I'm Gonna Shoot You!" Day.

Will Smith?

its a joke

LOL good joke too. I don't think I've ever liked any of Will Smith's movies - that includes Independence Day. I think he committed theatrical suicide when he agreed to do Wild Wild West. That movie was so bad that I'd be complimenting it by saying that it sucked.

I never gave out the impression that I was jealous of good ol' Mr. Crow. I am simply stating what I have hear from numerous media outlets. I get bored at work so I read a lot of entertainment magazines my manager brings in. Hollywood is almost as poilitical as Washington.

agree Shawn Penn and also Johnny Depp
billy bob thorten can act also(however I don't like him)kevin Spacy is good also

for all you Tom Hanks fans give me a break-he is so one dimensional(he is a lot like denzel---their the same charct-in every movie)

A good actor shouldn't be overpowering and take up the whole movie----

I don't mean that you're jealous of Mr. Crowe. I mean that the numerous media outlets are just being babies and stuff.

Besides, even if the guy is an asshole, he's a good actor. Acting awards are given to actors - not "nice people."

I think Will Smith's best movie to date was The Legend Of Bagger Vance.

russel crowe is nothing but a faggot ass motherfucker, that sorry fucker had the audacity to say that....... Hollywood is all about going to arnold schwarzenegger parties, but that doesnt float my boat, Im not impressed by that kind of stuff............after he said that bullshit, It just proved he was a punkass!!!!!1 He couldnt touch arnold with a candle, and he is just a sorry fucker.....if you knock arnold in any way your gonna have a problem with me, and with everyone else!!!!!!! Russell Crowe could only dream of lickin arnolds ass, thats why he doesnt like him!!!

I have heard Crowe is arrogant to. Who cares thougth. If I did Know him and he was an asshole to me I would just slap him upside his head and set him straight. He is an incredible actor asshole or not. Just saw "A beautifull mind" last night. Wasn't big on seeing it in the moviews cuz it didn't look to interesting. I was suprised how good it was. I wonder if it was his own added thing to put in the weird little forhead rubs when he was nervous. If it was his idea it was brilliance cuz it looked so right with the character. BTW "Gladiator" is probably my favorite movie.

YES that movie kicked ass! But I don't think it had anything to do with Will Smith's acting ability. He really only told some pretty funny jokes... anybody with a southern accent could have replaced him easily.

Matt Damon and the guy who played Walter Hagen (i.e. Jack Dalton from MacGyver!!!!) really made the movie.

And I wish someone would have introduced that annoying kid to his 9-iron.
