First off, I know this belongs in the cardio forum but more people check this out. So to the mods, I apologize.

Anyways, I'm preparing for the Army and have been running quite a bit. My shins are starting to f'n kill me. I'm guessing it's "shin splints". I've googled it a couple times and have found some ways to counter act this dilemma.

I bought brand new shoes, I run on pavement and stretch prior to run.

Has anybody had shin splints before?
If so, what corrective measures did you take to prevent this?
Is this permanent?
Are there excercises to do to rid myself of this?

Thanks in advance.

Yes I have had them and they suck. I have always been told to NOT run on hard surfaces such as pavement but trail running or grass is ideal. The only thing that will get rid of them is rest unfortanetly. Stretching your shinds is easy. You can either pull your leg back (like a flamingo stance) and pull your foot up and stretch it that way. Or they have shin "machines" where you are lifting weight up that in on your toes like raising your front half of your foot up. Some people say you can run thru them but I do not believe that theory.

If it gets really bad, they do sell a "compression sock" type thing you can wear. It is like a spandex type sleeve that goes over your leg up to your knee and holds the muscle down on the bone to relive the pain. I had them rubbed out once and let me tell you I would rather give birth than go thru that again. 20 minutes of feeling like the edge of a 2X4 is being racked down your shin sucks man; IT SUCKS. But it worked. Plus the old Rest Ice Compression Elevation is good. Oh and advil. :D

I had them when I first went into basic, When I ran in my boots it was the worst, couldn't even touch them for hours. But mine did go away with time, after about the 5th week of basic. Never had them again, and thats been quite a few years ago.
