Risk/reward of deadlifts?

I did a 1 rep max test on Saturday and was able to pull 315. But since I have never done them before and I am just starting to workout again after a long absense, I thought 225 would be a good starting point , next week will move weight up 5 pounds etc etc. till it starts to get tough. If I can get my dig camera to work I will try to record a session for you guys to critique my form. Last thing I really need is to blow out a disk .
Peace:fro:

DO NOT round your upper back forward while doin snatch grip deadlifts. i did this, and messed up a joint capsule in my upper back. should heal with time, said the sports doc.

Deadlifts aren't dangerous. Doing deadlifts wrong is dangerous.

I've had back problems for about a decade now. As I'm typing this, I'm in my 3rd week of recovery from a 2 level laminectomy of my lower back. The reason I finally had to have surgery is because of deadlifting heavy. However, the reason I didn't have to have back surgery many years ago is because of heavy deadlifting. I strengthened my mids and back so dramatically that I staved of the inevitable surgical procedures for a very long time. If I wasn't foolishly greedy with my lifts during this last year, I believe I would still be good to go. I was trying too hard to increase my lifts too fast thinking I was superman, and it caught up to me.

With the right training attitude and discipline, deadlifts are one of the best things you can ever do for your body.

I am a very skinny hard gainer at 150 lbs, i started lifting 135lbs x4 deadlifting, and am now at 250 x4 in a month and my back has gotten alot thicker...so even being a beginer i would always recommend a DEADLIFT in your routine.
