Description of Incident: at the scene, company vehicle) A contract logging crew was being transported aboard their Company aircraft from Campbell River to a Weyerhaeuser Contract logging camp approximately 20 nautical miles north east of Port McNeill. The pilot of the De Havilland Beaver floatplane was in contact with the Camp at the time of the accident and appeared to be having difficulty with weather conditions in the vicinity of his destination. At approx. 17:12 his last radio transmission was cut short and the aircraft was not heard from again. Search and Rescue was contacted and a search was commenced immediately using local aircraft and ground crews while awaiting the arrival of the Search and Resuce Teams from Comox . Morning fog hampered the search over the next three days as did the fact that no signal could be detected from the aircraft's emergency locator transmitter. At 15:24 on Thursday afternoon, one of the chartered search helicopters found some broken tree tops in a densely forested area 3-4 miles south of the Camp. The Search and Rescue Labrador Helicopter then flew the area and picked up a faint ELT signal which confirmed the necessity for further investigation. At 16:38, the Labrador lowered a crew into the area, located the wreck and announced that there were no survivors. Weyerhaeuser personel from the Port McNeill division were on hand to offer councilling and support and assisted in transporting search crews and support personel back to Alert Bay and Port McNeill .
