Responsibility for keeping gas prices down...

A poll out today says that eight out of ten Americans don't think that President Bush has a clear plan for keeping gas prices down. Well, guess what. It is not the president's, nor the government's role in our economy to keep the gas prices down. That is a function of the marketplace. If you want to see prices go down, decrease the demand so that the supply will increase.

We see here an illustration of a fundamental problem in America .. the belief that it is the government's role to smooth every bump in the road and straighten every tight curve for all Americans.

Agreed.

However, I would argue that it is this administrations (and every other administration currently in power in industrial countries) responsibility to encourage a lot more spending on R&D so that our countries are not held hostage to the price of oil. There seems to be more interest in subsidizing oil companies than encouraging alternatives.

gas prices are down. prices in this country are lower than anywhere else in the developed world.
i'm sick of these pussies being interviewed at gas stations and whining to reporters about high gas prices as they stand in front of their 9 mpg p.o.s. fuck'em

its a solution you have described, not a responsibilty-decreasing usage to ensure a glut of fuel....our govnmt. runs/owns the oil companies all over the world....they control the supply/demand. the only way to make a stand is for the masses to stop traveling by private vehicle, (to and from work) which would be the most powerful way to boycott fuel consumption....it would be a monumental task to orchastrate the population as a majority to call into work every day and say, "im not coming in, cant afford the gas" to bring down the price of fuel...our govnmt. knows this.

My next car would be electric if they didn't look like crap; maybe natural gas.

I love how people's FIRST reaction to a problem is -- get the government to fix it!

The SAME govt that people want keeping their hands off people and the private sector.

Too funny. Bunch of socialists masquerading as freedom-loving libertarians.

Why should oil companies even talk to the White House? Where is that written. Seem to be doing quite fine.

Actually, I was laughing more at people who drive for miles to save a few cents on the gas, but spend like crazy at the coffee house.

"So I drove an extra 10km for a savings of 10cents per gas!"

"If you didn't buy that lattee, you wouldn't look gay and saved more money."

"But I need the latte."

ARGH!

Why should the oil companies talk to the White House? To gain even further subsidies and gifts of course.

Wrong. Gas is cheaper in Iraq and Iran. I think saudi arabia as well. Less than a dollar if I read it right

I believe he is referring to places like Canada and Europe where gas is considerably more expensive than it is in the US.
