Removing Old Wall Paper

Im removing Old wall paper in my basement. The SHit is some 1970's stripped crap. Looks psychadelic or whatever the old term was. How hard is it to remove old wall paper..I plan on painting the walls white...Any tips?

Removing old wall paper is a BITCH! You will need to rent a steamer.....

Then you will spend HOURS steaming and then scraping the wall with a putty knife.

My brother and his wife couldn't get the wallpaper off of the walls of their house (also very old wallpaper) and they ended up putting dry wall over the wallpaper to create a NEW wall!

Good luck!

A friend of mine is redoing a house and he has been lucky so far. Their paper is coming off in big sheets, but like VDL said, rent a steamer and be prepared for it to take a while.:(

I wallpapered my kitchen and bathrooms and I had to take down the paper that was already there. I took a pump sprayer and mix a concoction of 1 part water and 10 parts water and sprayed it down and let it soak in. Stuff peeled off with no problem.

And, yes....I typed that right.....water only will take old wallpaper off with no problem. Might have to soak it a couple of times for the hard to get off wallpaper but it will come off with only water.

Try it......it sure as hell won't cost you anything!

If the wallpaper is particularly stubborn, you may want to consider painting over it before you try scraping it.

I own an old home, and in a few rooms, the wallpaper has been painted over because it is so firmly affixed to the walls that it would be a major pain to take down.

Plus, if you have plaster walls, you may expose a good amount of cracks that would need to be patched and sanded.

Just a thought.

Plus large pieces of plaster can come off with the paper.:(

Oh yeah, forgot about that. :lmao:

yep, that's part of the fun.

Who needs plaster when you can go back in with sheet rock! :D
