Here is a few schemes I like. The colors will probably not change. WHERE the colors are added and how, is still up for debate. I'd love to hear suggestions/comments.

Below is without any orange. The blue compliments areas of bluish/gray which is in the floor. The white cabinet faces will match the counter tops.

I never want to hear you tell me "no" again.

Now show me your tits.

Yeah the first and second one.. Blue isn't bad but the yellow is too bright...

first one, unless you're entire apartment/trailer is that modern colorful type of look

The kitchen is away from the rest of the house somewhat.

Notice there is only one window in that area so there is not much light at all, even in the daytime.

Tis why I thought bright colors would brighten it up.

yellow? It's ORANGE!

Probably my bad though because my monitor is a piece of garbage that displays colors poorly.

Well if thats Orange..

Er...

Still NO..

I hate all of them... but I personally perfer either a natural wood finish, or going with a simple pickling finish.

Looks like the Crayola Mafia did a drive by.

Seriously bro, it is hard to really tell and give you advice because I/we can't see the rest of the house. You want the kitchen to have harmony and gel with the rest of the room(s) that it can be seen from (since you have what looks like an open floor plan kitchen).

What does the rest of the pad look like? That is what you want to reflect. You can paint the entire base gloss black and then have someone cut you some wood overlays (that match whatever else you have) to cover the doors and front refridge panels with them.

ok, honestly?

hideous, your choices are.

Here's my thoughts... you can get away with different colored doors if
a. your kitchen is large and has a definate style, ie, modern, country, etc. Yours has neither.

b. You used colors in the same tone, which you didn't.

Your countertop is white or off-white? is it staying that color? i assume the floor is staying that beige stone look that's really linoleum?
I'd paint the walls a taupe color (grey/beige mix) and the cabinets the same color as the countertop, then put on all new hardware (knobs and hinges if they show). It may seem boring to you, but its a lot cleaner looking and will make the kitchen look richer, IMO.
If you want color, add artwork, or paint that wall where the stairs is a blue/grey, and add similar color accents around the kitchen.

also, the moulding over the window is dated because of the scalloped edge. I'd take that down, and make sure you paint the wood surrounding the window- its currently looks unfinished.

Thanks for the opinions everyone.

Yes this is the last area of the house that needs renovating. Parts of it is tacky and some old and worn.

I do not have the money currently for new cabinets so I will have to make do with what is there.

The countertop is a white/gray mix (almost speckled)

The floor is also light in color, but it looks brown in the pic because there is no light down there! Hence why it needs bright colors.

allblue.jpg

last blue hue is better.

First blue and orange...those colors are WAY too highly saturated for a kitchen and would burn holes in your eyes after a few days.

Think about installing light cans in the ceiling for more light... that seems to be your main issue. Lack of light, hence the bright colors.

I would say if your going to keep alot of white, use a muted color. One that stileto suggested, or a cardnal red, olive green or something like that.
I like a little wild color, but I wouldn't go blue and orange. They are compliments (opposite on a color wheel) and look like crap, IMHO. Try blue and green, get rid of all that white.

I think the problem is that I am not seeing the same colors you guys are.
My boss is a cheap ass and bought me a cheap ass monitor. Colors are off on this thing.

When I go home and look at the same pics on my dell they always look completely different.

nomatter what color blue and yellow you're planning on using, its outdated. those colors are out.

and without a lot of light in that kitchen, the colors you see at the paint department aren't what you'll see in your dark kitchen.

I'm not usually a "white" person, but in the case of a smallish, dark kitchen, where the countertops are already white I'd go that route.

keep your color choices close on the color wheel, and having the same color doors as you do cabinets, will make the room look larger than having two different colors. You can add colored knobs or add an inexpensive backsplash- 4"x4" white tiles are 33 cents... add an accent colored tile or border and you'll have a nicer look.

Yuck bro on all painted wood surfaces! I would go with all wood showing. I am a big fan of black maple but that is super expensive. Cherry is good, hickory, walnut. Not an Oak fan anymore. just my opinion

SONOFABITCH, It's orange, not yellow!

lol, i need a new monitor.

I like your tile idea though.

yeah, i said yellow cause blue and orange are too gross, even for you.
is this in the mets dugout? no? don't do blue and orange.

you can get a really nice, cheap accent border tile off the shelf in lowes or home depot in beige or blue. add that onto the white backsplash tile (you can rent a tile cutter or borrow mine) and you'll have a much more finished look. get knobs to match for the cabinets, or a really nice brushed chrome would look great.

with that low ceiling and poor lighting, you want to keep everything clean, simple, and quiet.

definately acceptable. even somewhat nice, as long as you pic a nice blue. if you go to lowes and look at the american tradition paint, look in the "muted" section- they tend to be a little easier on the eyes. or pick a tile backsplash first (since money is an issue), then the paint to match (easier to match that way).

OH DEAR GOD

Can all the cabinetry be painted?

If so paint the cabinets "cottage red" from BJ Moore, paint the walls "revere pewter" or "edgecomb gray" from BJ Moore and the ceiling dove white from BJ Moore.

Ceiling and walls (eggshell ONLY if the walls are in good shape - flat finish if they are not)

Cabinets in Semi gloss

Suggestion - take all hardware off, all the doors off and the draws out - palm sand and hand sand EVERYTHING, wipe down with a damp towel and wait til it's dry to paint. Use a roller on all the doors and draws, use a brush on all the difficult areas to get to on the frame and follow up with a roller.

And don't be stingy with the paint and dry roller just leaves marks.

:)

Good Luck

look- no lighting, no soffit... as much as i love red in a kitchen... his is in a cave.
velvett is right about sanding and painting... do it RIGHT. only flat or eggshell on the walls!!

That's why I never work for friends and family - or friends and family of those people.

lol, no, i trust you- i just didn't know if you noticed the picture.
new kitchen i'm designing is a dark plum color, but its got vaulted ceilings and skylights.

you like cabinets too..huh?

My kitchen is twice the size of yours and I have 1/2 the number of cabinets. That's a lot of painting to do.

Whatever color you choose....get new cabinet handles

wood floor or colored cement floor, stainless appliances, granite countertops, glass and wood cabinet doors and shelves, a small portable island with a stainless potrack and a small plasma tv.

Sweet.

is your fridge very tall or is the ceiling low? (or both)

dump the house and buy one of those townhouses that keep popping up around gray.....before johnson city annexes it and doubles the property taxes.

hahha....friggin funny!

AAP....no to both colors. What you can do is change that hidious lennolium floor.

The blue+orange+white looks like a circus tent. Or Chuck-E-Cheese.

Keep what you've got now and get rid of the vinyl sheet goods on the floor instead. Some tile or hardwood would do nicely.

i have the soft touch one and when the spring crapped out - they replaced it FREE

cool.
did you get it from the manufacturer? i got mine from a store (can't remember if it was the container store or bed bath and beyond).

one of my friends spent like $250 on his kitchen pail- you just wave your hand over it and the cover hydrolically opens. it broke. company said, "oh well".

GET THIS!

Pottery Barn OUTLET - $49
I always find good stuff there - you just have to weed through the broken stuff.

I buy a lot of their medicine cabinet too, when I see ones I can salvage.

dang!
i love pottery barn, but there's no outlet near me.

i bought my living room curtains there. cheaper than custom and nicer than most store bought.

wait... these are them:
http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p5395/index.cfm?pkey=cprwwinslk
except not that color.
i didn't buy the rods there- i paid half the price at another store.

aap - listen to Velvett & Stilletto.....they know their stuff.....

At the very least, if you can't afford upgrades, add lighting....

i dont agree with your garbage can be in plain view.. as well as those protien bottles and that tv in your kitchen.. colors i like the first one..

Ok you people poking fun, the original plan when I bought the house was to build a new kitchen in a different area of the house. This area has not been remodeled nor touched much at all.

Recently, moving has been considered by me. Therefore it is time to fix this kitchen up in case I need to sell the house. This is the last area of the house that needs worked on.

Could it be opposite....the walls red and cabinets gray? What would that look like?

^^^I liked Stilletos tile splashback idea, so I will prob do that. I think the tiles would look better in red than gray, that's why I am asking.

and yes all cabinets can and will be painted along with new hardware.

In your kitchen, whatever you paint the cabinets will be the very dominant color, since you don't have much wall space.
grey cabinets with red walls would be nice- not as nice as red cabinets, but i think that would be too dark for you anyway. do a great, inexpesive backsplash in white and grey or white and red and get chrome or brushed chrome knobs (that adds up.. you need a lot of them).

also, if you don't have them now, you can install under cabinet lighting easier than putting in new ceiling fixtures, although you really should add or change that.

okay, so if I painted the cabinets a red color and the walls a gray color as Velvett mentioned, then what color should the backsplash tiling be? You are saying that should still be white and grey or white and red?

Under cabinet rope lighting was already in the plans....that's a definite.

I was thinking of putting down tile flooring but after reading what a bitch it is to remove linoleum and the glue, I may hold off.

Were you Serious about those colors ???
They all looked like something out of a preK kids show.

You should have wood stained them IMO

Sorry but those colors are so out of date. Let your girlfriend pick out colors for you. Could not be worst. Most men I know have no clue when it comes to decorating.

you're keeping the white-ish countertop, right?
i'd go with the same color backsplash, or as close as possible. it'll brighten it up, reflect the under-cabinet lighting, and might help make the room look bigger.
buy the nicest accent tile or border you can afford. even if you do mostly inexpensive white tile (you can put them on the diagonal for a nicer look), try to find a border tile that you LOVE.

Yes, the countertop is more of a light gray.

How is this looking?

There's flooring available that looks like tiles but is a solid piece of flooring. East to install if you do not have to make a ton of cuts.

My floor looks like wood laminate. My house is very expensive but you'd never know the floor in my kitchen was some cheap ass flooring.

Also, if I am headed in the right direction, what about these remaining concerns I have listed below?

Remove your rich-ass from my cheap-ass thread.

I'm not worried about the tile cutting or installation. I'm concerned about removing the existing glue, paper, and vinyl flooring. This has to be done in order to get a good bond with whatever floor type I am laying.

no, actually behind me taking that pic is open space.

Approx 15'-0" X 20'-0" of open space to be exact. The only other room on that level is the laundry room and a storage room.....not joining the kitchen area though.

lemme see if i remember everything asked- trim around window and inside of sill should be the same grey as the walls.

yes, that 2" or so soffit over the cabinets should also be the grey of the walls.

you can put down a nice red rug in front of the sink, but NO curtain over the window as per foxxie's advice. that look left in the 80s, imo. You need all the light you can get- remove that wood trim over the window and leave it open.

yes, chrome or brushed chrome hardware.

that sketch looked good- with the red cabinets, and light grey or white backsplash. make sure you take off the doors to paint, sand with progressively finer papers, then remove all dust with a tack cloth (and I use a hair dryer to blow off more). use a very fine sandpaper between coats, and then remove the dust again.
it sounds time consuming, but its not difficult and the payoff is big.

thank you for the k- i LOVE choosing color. I'm currently having a small addition built on my house (an office) and had to pick the colors yesterday. Its a fairly large room with a lot of light. As much as I love wood floors, I'm putting carpet in this one to suppress noise, and to warm the room- charcoal gray carpet, a blue/green/grey color (its the color of a juniper tree) on the walls, and a raspberry couch with light blue/green/grey piping. i'm stoked. :)

If I had a wood subfloor there would be ways to lay ceramic tile over the laminate, however my laminate is over concrete. There is really no good way other than revoving the laminate, paper and that son-of-a-bitch glue. :(

Pull everything out of the room, including your lower cabinets. Put hardiboard down and tile the floor, right over your current vinyl bullshit if you don't feel like taking it up.

He left the cabinets, but removed the appliances. I did it a few months before I sold, so I didn't want anything major. There was a ton of equity in it, and I didn't want to chance tearing it up, finding something major that needed to be fixed, and have to take care of a bunch of boolshit.

When I bought this house it was going to be a "fix up and resale". However the more and more work I did the more I liked it.

When I get the kitchen finished I'll post up before and after pics of the entire house. You will be shocked.

I believe in doing work myself. I find it fun and rewarding. I only hire someone to do work if it's something I'm incapable of, unlike a lot of couch potatoes posting in this thread.

Here's the kitchen when I bought the house and the after.
