Bumping this thread.
I do think that a little background knowledge about pharmaceutical companies is in order here.
GH is expensive, and it is used for GH deficient children and adults.
This is a very rare condition. Initially, GH was extracted from cadaveric pituitary glands, and it took A LOT of brains to do this.
The 'breakthrough' came with the genetic engineering of a lot of hormones, insulin was the first, and factor 8 (for haemophilia) were the first recombinant hormones.
How this works is that the gene that makes insulin is inserted into a bacteria, and they then produce the product.
Simple concept, works well for some of the simpler hormones, but it does require a a great deal of research and development.
So the pharma companies have made this new recombinant GH, probably cost a bomb to develop, and there is a limited used for it.
Similarily, the reason why drug development for some diseases that kill most people around the world, infantile diarrhoea, malaria, do not have much research as the countries that are plagued with these diseases do not have money.
A HUGE amount of money does go into drugs that will prevent baldness and promote erections though........................................
They are lucrative.
I know a lot of you may realise I am a complete science boffin, I read medical journals during my tea breaks and lunch breaks because I LIKE THEM.
One of the things that is constantly coming up is how ruthless pharmaceutical companies are, how they have very little integrity, how they will not publish adverse events in clinical trials (by this time, the money invested is phenomenal, they are certainly NOT going to want to scrap a new drug at this stage, and they don't).
I am sure they are laughing their asses off all the way to the bank with the new interest in GH, and I am sure I read somewhere that gentrophin (not sure what company) had their wrists slapped for making assertions about GH being 'anti-aging'.
Pharmaceutical companies, IMHO, are a necessary evil right now. They need to be regulated more, and they also need some sort of other motivation besides making money for their stockholders.
It is the pressure from pharmaceutical companies that has had a HUGE number of herbal supplements now being highly regulated, and also just not available in a number of countries.
I am sure some of you will want evidence of the unscrupulous behaviour of the pharmaceutical companies, and all I will have to do is pick up the latest copy of the British Medical Journal tomorrow, and I am sure there will be at least 4 articles/news briefs about ANOTHER dodgy practice by one of these companies.
Google Paxil and COX-2 inhibitors (forget the generic name) if you want some very public controversies.
Don't be scammed, do your research before you choose to use this drug.
