Yeah, so like a dumbass people will invite them in so they can scan your place for anything somewhat incriminating that will give them probable cause to search w/o a warrant. When you deny them entry they try to scare you by asking what you're hiding. That's your cue to slam the door in their face.
A phone call won't do much for them-unless they already have a warrant for your arrest and they're checking to see if you're home before they kick your door in.
