Reading Into Thin Air by John Krakauer

He hit another one out of the park with this book. It is the story of the 1996 Everest disaster. If you have been watching the Everest serries on Discovery and liked that you will really dig this book. Tells a lot about the type of person who becomes a mountaineer, but also how the mountain has become more commerical.

At any rate this book really describes how dangerous mountineering really is. It still hasn't changed my mind to climb Mt. Raineer next summer though.

I thought it was a bit thin on material, but then not much is known about him since he was on his own so much.

True. But I liked the way he wrote things the way he thought he saw them and then the way others said it happened. It's crazy how the altitude affects the body, even with O2.

Great book, makes you hate that taiwaneese group or whoever that were so unprepared.
I think there was so many fuck ups it was hard to pick one out. Bottom line is at 25,000 feet if you get into trouble you may as well be on the moon. I think one of the worst was the S.A. team not letting anyone use the radio to help Rob Hall.

I'd like to read more about this disaster... is Krakaeur's account of it the most detailed?

I think it is the most researched for sure and he does a good job ( as he did with Into the Wild ) of keeping his opinions minimal and presenting all possibilities.

I've read Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, and Under the Banner of Heaven... all good books. I've never read anything he's put in Outside magazine though...
