"Boyz N The Hood" - Eazy E was a landmark song.
Ice Cube originally wrote it for an East Coast rap group, but they claimed the song was too "West Coast". Dr. Dre & DJ Yella had laid the beats down and they had to decide who would do the vocals. Eazy E didnt want to rap originally, but Dre convinced him he could, so he did the song.
What made the song such a landmark song was that in 1986-7, a lot of the Rap wasnt anything close to being gangsta rap. It was mostly catchy dance type shit, bubblegum rap, etc., although there were a few exceptions (Ice T, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, etc.). So when a song came out talkin about smackin bitches & their dads down, pullin your strap out on niggas, and all that other shit, people were shitting themselves.
NWA did more for Rap than most will ever realize by breaking down barriers, challenging the press & politicians, got people to say "Fuck the Police" and even got letters from the F.B.I.
