Hey I am asking this for a female friend of mine...

She was told by one of her professors that when women consume a fair ammount of liquor that it raises their test. levels by 5 times, which is also why many become sexually aroused after having several drinks....

Her question is this, if this is true, wouldn't it be a half-way good idea to lift after having a couple of drinks. I told her no, that the booze will lower protien synthesis and that if this is the case, it would probably have to be a lot of liquor and then she would be lifting drunk, but as being I am a male I have NO idea how a woman's body reacts to what.

Also, if not lift half way liquored up, what about afterwards. Once again I told her no and once again, I know didly about womens inner workings.

Thankyou for any and all help,

Whiskey and a Friend

Tell her to ask the prof for a literature citation (research paper that shows this).

I doubt 5x. Perhaps some only because alcohol may inhibit or compete with the same CYP enzyme in the liver, thus reducing the clearance of testosterone for a short period of time. I really doubt this is the reason for increased interest in sex, has more to do with effects of alcohol on inhibition.

and....go to any hole in the wall bar and take a look at the product of heavy drinking on the female physique.

Drinking and lifting is as stupid as drinking and driving.

Yeah, I have trouble not hurting myself sober...

Not to mention the other health risks involved with drinking...including increased incidence of breast cancer.

Did you see the story of my recent barbell-in-the-face benching fiasco? (In the Jan. crowd thread.) I've still got the mark to show for it, not to mention an injured right arm...I can't imagine how bad it would've been if I'd been inebriated!

It is true that female heavy drinkers have significantly higher test levels than non-drinkers. This does not make alcoholic a good training supp!!! The negative effects on metabolism far outweigh any increase in test, so that many long term many alcoholic women end up with a beer belly, excess facial hair, a deep voice and a trashed liver and brain, impaired immune response, not to mention an increase in estrogen.

Light drinking raises T levels in both men and women, but it is not a large or sustained increase so is not likely to affect libido or training directly.

That's pretty stunning to hear MS. I've always heard that alcohol decreases T.

From what Wilson says it sounds like there isnt an actual increase in T production but rather an increase in circulating T due to the amount of time the liver spends metabolizing alcohol.

Can you or Wilson clarify this?

sorry I haven't been on here, not enough time. I know it is dumb to even try, Ijust wan't shure on the whole raising test level thing.

It comes out that the dumbass got it from a magazine so he put it in his class.... what a teacher huh.

With the caveat that dose, age and gender all can have an effect on alcohols impact on your testosterone levels, it *appears* in general that alcohol causes an increase in adrenal production of androgens in women, as well as causing an increase in the liver's conversion of andostendione to testosterone. Men are not so lucky and are more likely to experience a decrease in T production via testes suppression. There is also a transient effect in the liver, but (at least in rats!!) it appears that high test levels actually inhibit the metabolism of ethanol rather than the other way around, so female mice (having lower T) are less affected. If this holds true in humans the men get a double whammy to their testosterone from drinking more than a small amount of alcohol.

Either way there is no question that drinking alcohol increases circulating androgens in women.

I've written a personal account of my drinking and dietary experiences as a bodybuilder here:

Thanks for clarifying this issue for me MS.

This really makes sense when I consider the women I've seen who are longterm regular drinkers. They typically have unusually deep voices and more often than not a more manly appearance around the torso, i.e. thicker waisted and lower abdominal fat placement. My aunt is a perfect example of this.

As a quick anecdote I'll tell you I'll be 21 in may and partied mightily until about 2 years ago and already I've noticed some of these physical changes in my old (female) friends.

I also post in Strong Chick so I'll go check out that thread you sited. Thanks MS. :)
