Racked Deads

I read in the Powerlifting Forums stickies that when you rack your deads it isolates the back more.

Im looking to reduce the lower body involvment and use it purely for back, hence my back routine is based around it, although its different every week.
Is this a good idea? Also belt or no Belt?

So Im 6', How high/low should I set the pins?
Im guessing a little below the knees?

Also someone give me some advice on straps please.
cheers

Ideally you do rack pulls from just below the knee(regardless of your height), but it all depends on where your rack sets you up at. As you will be able to do more weight a belt is a good idea once you start really getting heavy. I always advise that you do all your warm-ups and most of your working sets without a belt. Straps can be very usefull here again once the weight starts getting higher, but try to use your natural grip as much as possible.

Cheers,
Scotsman

If it is to isolate back then avoid keeping your legs straight, a bit of a knee bend will be fine.

On the other hand, if your trying to strenghten your back then why use belt? even if you have to lower the weight a little try it without belt, so that you can focus on your natural belt.

Regarding how high/low... my opinion is that you place them at knee level or a few inches above.

Hope this helps

Rack pulls destroy my upper back. I do these when I train legs and back close together in the week, because regular deads kill me after squating. Pull from just below the knees like the Big Scot has said and don't be afraid to strap up. I would rather throw on the straps than use an alternating grip. Peace.
