he was originally the Military consultant on the filming of FMJ....the director called him at the hotel and basically told him the original casted DI was not cutting it and wanted Ermy to take over the role...hence, one of the best movies ever made. Most of it was Ad-libbed by Ermy- so jarhead you are correct.
