ok, i shut down my PC, but it wasnt turning off... so i just held down the power button till it shut down. usually this goes no problem, but now when i restart it, it goes safe mode, safe mode with net working, safe mode with command prompt and last known good settings, option page with a 29 second count down. before i arrive to this page, there is this blue screen that goes error, at like cxetc etc etc then it goes to this safe mode, options screen. i have fixed this before, by remembering the actual cx error line, googling it, then finding the step by step solution on microsoft's site. but this time it just flashes so quick i cant see it fast enough, before going to options. i know i have to boot from CD ROM, then go to setup, repair, then there is somethingt that i have to type, PC does its thing and everything goes back to normal. but what is it that i have to type once it gets to this dos prompt after booting from CD. thanks guys. btw i have windows xp, athlon 3000+, 256 ddr ram, 40 gig hd and geforce 6600 on an asus a7v8x board.

Its probably a Blue Screen of Death error and its 0x0000 IRQ less than or equal or something like that. theres about 40 of them, can you tell me the exact memory address? 0x something or other?

no im sorry i wish i could. i am nearly 99 percent sure that the memory adress is the one that actually requires the booting from the CD ROM solution and sadly not the other one where I can just type r/disk or something to that extent. rao thanks for the suggestion but i cant even go into windows, lol :(

If you insert the CD, it should boot from the CD, no DOS prompt. You should choose option 'R' to repair....

Before you do that....

I suspect it is a driver problem....most BSOD are driver problems. More than likely for you video....do you have a disk for that? If not, you can boot into safemode w/networking and get on the internet and try and find them...after their installation try rebooting....

Have you gone to the device manager to check your video card settings? You can also reinstall your video drivers from the DM, but if they're missing or corrupt, then you'll need to reinstall from another source...internet/disk...

Try it and let me know. Good Luck.

I just reread...sorry.

So you can't even get into windows from safemode, eh?

You definetly need to use your CD....if you computer does not boot to the CD then you need to access your BIOS and change your boot option to boot to CD first...you'll want to set this back after you fix.

Put the CD in and restart...the Welcome to Windows should start and there should be an option to repair....

Dude, what bios are you running on that board? Last time I cheched ( I have the exact same model) it wouldn't allow to run 4000Mhz FSB processor. I am running a 2500+, since it was the highest 333 FSB available at the time.

About your problem, can you go back to the last restore point?

pino: i dont know what my bios version is, but its the default one- i havent touched it at all.

squat: no man, i cant even get in using last known good settings. its messed up pretty bad at the moment.

The Blue Screen of Death!

Go into safe mode. Go into device manager by right clicking "my computer" and selecting "properties". Check to see if you have any devices that have a yellow "!" by it. Delete them if so. You should turn on "show hidden devices" also by doing this in regedt32 http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1107/

It appears that you have a device driver that is broken causing the computer to crash on boot , so repairing your installation from cd replaces the driver. Do you use SATA from from the motherboard. Maybe going to asus and getting an update for that will fix it? Anyway, You shouldn't need the cdrom, unless you're sure your installation is broken

^dude i couldnt even go into windows to begin with

but i fixed it though. i remember the command, what i did was, booted from CD ROM, then R for repair, then at the recovery console, i typed in chkdsk /r. the PC did all the work and i can log back in now. so for future reference, if the same stuff happens to you guys, thats how you fix it.
