questions about XP cause i got some issues

No such thing as an XP boot disk as XP does not run on a dos shell anymore. I guess you could download a win98 bot disk if you needed to.

right click my computer and go to system restore. turn that shit off
right click recycle bin. check do not move files to recycle bin
right click internet explorer. in the gereal tab, settings make sure temp int files folder is no larger than 20 mb
right click an empty space on your desktop. go to properties, select the screen saver tab, and click the power button. go to hibernate and turn off hibernate

that could free up at least a gig of space

i had win98 installed before i put XP on this box, and XP over wrote win98. the hard drive partition i put XP on was only a 5gb partition. 4.54gb of that drive is now full. my 'Windows' folder is only 1.3GB, and my 'Program Files' folder is 1.03gb. that's the only large things on this partition. i can't find where the other 2G of space are, yet the drive is practially full.

did XP just write to the side of win98? i can't see anything win98 related, yet there's no space left on this drive. it's annoying actually, because there's more programs i want to install but don't have the room for them.

what to do?

There's one file in XP that will slowly grow and consume your c:\ partition. I can't remember what it's called, but it has to do with XP keeping a history so that you can roll back to the last known good state, or keeping a history so that when the system goes into hibernation, it'll come back with everything still running, or something... Damnit, I wish I could be more specific. I nuked this thing a year ago and reclaimed over a gig in my c:\ partition, but now I don't remember what I did. Maybe this will help someone else direct you to the answer.

When you defrag, do you see one immense, unmoveable file in the middle of the drive? That's the one I'm talking about. On a desktop machine, it's pointless. Go into Display Properties and disable anything having to do with hibernation and see if that helps.

Like you, I keep XP on a 5g c:\ partition that doesn't have any other apps on it, and it still gets crowded in there.

crak it's cause of the porn :(

not a chance. i have a 20g drive split in 2 partitions, 5g and 15g, the 15g has nothing on it but mandrake linux.

i have a 100g hard drive split into 5 partitions, one of them is reserved for porn and actually only has 2g on it (i've been slacking).

Devistation, i'll give that a whirl. i don't use Internet Exploder, i use Mozilla Firefox, but i'll reset IE and Firefox's temp files to no larger than 20mb.

mr db - havn't defragged this drive yet. prolly should soon, as it's been a month or two since i've installed XP.

One other thing -- you can move the swap file to your d:\ partition and that should open up some space on c:\.

can't find that.

done.

i've had hibernation turned off since day one. everything else i just did with the exception of the first one.

another "issue" is my mail program. i'm running Mozilla Thunderbird (i HATE outlook). it's set to download my mail automatically and delete it from the server upon doing so. sometimes friends send me videos or pictures, so i know that's eating up some space.

about the whole XP being installed "to the side" of win98, is that what's happened here? also, since i can't seem to boot off of the XP cd, is it possible that if i just went and completely formatted the windows partition and restarted with the CD in place, i could boot off of it? it's kind of tricky, because when the computer is rebooted, i go straight to the lilo worst comes to worst i could re-install win98 and then install XP again. i'm sure it'd be cleaner because i wouldn't have a bunch of old programs sitting there that i'm not even using any more (and can no longer see).

went into linux to see what i could do from there. i think the only thing i deleted was MSN Messenger, which was getting annoying cause it'd want to start up every time i started up the computer. nothing else was giving me permission to delete.

tried to delete some programs through disk clean up, but it couldn't find my XP disk in the drive for some reason. guess that's what happens when you have a *cough* *hack* *cough* *ed* CD.

went into the bios and made sure the computer was accessing the CD drive before the hard drive (will check this one again, might have to turn the hard drive off) and it wouldn't boot off the XP CD. i've also tried booting off of my DVD drive before and it won't do that either. the computer ends up going right to the /mbr and runs lilo to give me my options to start up either linux or windows. i might be able to go into linux and add an option to start up off of the CD drive. i'll have to check that out.

when i've installed linux, i've had to use a boot disk for it. it won't boot off of the CD drive even with properly burned linux CDs. i don't know if this is something to do with my hardware or not.

running defrag on the windows drive right now. there is a huge green block that's labeled an unmovable file. i guess this is the one you were referring to mr. db. it didn't want to defrag because i only have 5% free space, but i can't seem to clear up the 15% that it wants, so i'm making it do it anyway.

mr db, the swap partition you mentioned is referring to the linux one, correct? if so, i don't have that on my 20g drive. it's on my 100g drive. i gave it 2g of space and it's never been needed from what i've seen. the computer has 1g of ram installed, but the kernel i'm running in linux only recognizes 890mb or something like that.

i'll report back after a defrag. any other suggestions?

Right click on the desktop, select "Properties."

In the "Display Properties" box, go to the "Screen Saver" page.

On the Screen Saver page, select the "Power" button.

In the Power Options Properties box, select the "Hibernate" page. If the "Enable hibernation" box is checked, un-check it.

This should gain you slightly over a gig of free space.
