questions about XP cause i got some issues

when installing XP, is there an option to do a full format install? i don't recall seeing this when i installed it the first time, just did an upgrade. there's some things i need to grab from my e-mail if i do a full format install, but other than that, download AIM, Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, and i'm back in business again.

so what's the deal? i've done the things you guys have listed above (hibernate has been turned off from the get-go) and havn't reclaimed any drive space. i've got 259mb free space right now.

Another thing: when you look in your c:\winnt directory, do you see a long list of files with names like $abcxyz123$ ?

If so, those are backups for updates done via Windows Update, and you can delete them with impunity. That might free up a few meg.

here's a copy of the files not able to be fragmented. are any important?

do any of these look like those backups you're talking about mr db?

Anything in your windows directory with the "$________________$" can be safely deleted.

Now, make windows move the swap file from the c:\ partition to the d:\ partition and you'll free up some more.

mr. db, i more than owe you a beer, but i won't blow you. sorry.

i dropped it down to 2, then moved the swap partition like i had my linux one, which was on a separate hard drive. the windows partition is on a 20g hard drive, but the other 15g has been allocated solely for linux. windows doesn't even know it's there.

i have a 100g hard drive as well, but no space issues on that one.

thanks my man! i had no clue XP ran a swap partition. i doubt i've ever used or will ever need to use it either, but it's there.

i just found the system restore option too. i forgot that i accidentily deleted the "My Computer" icon a while back and just put a shortcut on the desktop in it's place. anywho, i turned it off, and now i have 2.4G free and 2.36G used. that's a lot better than just the 1.8G i was up to by moving the swap partition.

thanks again!
