i had win98 installed before i put XP on this box, and XP over wrote win98. the hard drive partition i put XP on was only a 5gb partition. 4.54gb of that drive is now full. my 'Windows' folder is only 1.3GB, and my 'Program Files' folder is 1.03gb. that's the only large things on this partition. i can't find where the other 2G of space are, yet the drive is practially full.

did XP just write to the side of win98? i can't see anything win98 related, yet there's no space left on this drive. it's annoying actually, because there's more programs i want to install but don't have the room for them.

what to do?

next time you are looking at your drive in the explorer go to tools -> folder options -> view tab -> find where it says "Hidden Files and folders" and select the "show" radio button. XP hides many system files so you can't hurt them. They are taking up space that you are not seeing.

Also, clean out your temporary internet files. Depending on what your settings are, that can take a huge amount of space.

i HAVE to clean out my temp internet files about once a week cause the drive gets down to less than 200mb free space.

i did the show hidden files thing and there's nothing really hiding in that drive that's taking up THAT much room. yeah, there's a lot of stuff in the "Windows" folder that's all system file related, but hardly anything hiding on that drive.

so is it possible that XP just wrote to the side of win98 and i can't see win98 anymore, yet that's what's taking up all the space?

Not entirely sure about that, but I know when you install one OS over another as you did, it's not exactly the most "clean" install in the world. It will run slower and there will be more unnecessary garbage.

I'd recommend doing a full format and clean install of Windows XP.

i have to try to make a boot disk for XP. i've had some issues with my floppy drive lately in XP and i can't figure out why. maybe it's the drive, maybe the disks i'm using, i dunno.

it's a *cough* hack *cough* ed *cough* XP cd, so it won't auto boot itself. on the plus side, i am still dual booting windows and mandrake linux, so i can go into linux and wipe the XP partition clean instead of messing around with fdisk. i partitioned both of my hard drives with linux instead of fdisk cause it was 10x easier.

You ever try to run just a Linux machine?

I thought most of the important apps nowadays had a Linux version or at the very least could be emulated in Linux.

I've never tried Linux myself.

That is a bad idea if you use your computer for any job-critical applications. When you least expect it is when your emulator will drop a shit.

yes, but people also get killed for keeping a family of renegade circus midgets in their bedroom closet for sexual purposes, but i won't tell anyone about that. your secret is safe with me.
