Question on tipping

Hmm, I feel like a cheap ass now. I almost never tip on carry-out. I figure the tip is for the service, and you bypass all that with carry-out. So 10% is somewhat standard then?

Whats next... Tipping Fast food resturants?

Tipping is based on two things- Service and quality. Each should be 10% for a total of 20%.

You should not tip at carry-out for these reasons- 1, you tip on the quality of the food and you wont know that until you get home and eat, and 2, if you were to tip them on the service, which there really wasnt any, then you would be obligated to tip at every fast food and convenience store you went to.

If you have a bit of change left over then you could drop it in the 'tip cup' they ussualy have on the counter. But in no way should you feel obligated to break a twenty just to tip them a buck or two. If they dont like it, tell them to get a better job. But when you go to a nice restaurant dont be stingy on the tips!

I do depending on the restaurant and i'll tell you why..............but typically not 15%

Most of the time it's a waiter putting in the order, if not always.
If it's a restaurant where they don't have a separate take out section (i.e. chili's, outback) they'll always make people tip out(to bartenders, busser) from their overall sales. So if you don't tip they actually lose money making a sale like that.

They still have to put the order in, pack it in to go boxes and hurry to make sure your food is on time.

If you haven't worked in the restaurant industry then you probably don't know about that....but it sucks to be a waiter and get fucked on a carry out/take out order

CW, I didn't know they did that at Outback. Then again I've never ordered curb-side pick up.

If I'm picking it up myself though I usually throw a few bucks into the tip jar. Little more if she's cute.

If I get take-out from a restaurant I will tip, usually 10%. The one place I go to -- the waitresses take the order, I pay them & they bring me the food. So I think they deserve something -- plus they always remember to get me hot sauce.

no shit! tipping on carryout is ridiculous.

Well, at Subway & McDonald's yes...... but in a decent restaurant where the wait staff handles it -- I think it's warranted

I worked as a host at Outback for a couple of months last year. The take out guys still depend on tips, like waiters because like some one mentioned, they have to hustle to place your order and get everything ready on time. Of course, they don't expect the same tip as if they had waited on you.

Sorry, but no way. My buddy works in one of the best restuarants in Vegas, and he says not to tip on carry out.

What about Pizza Hut and Dominos? Do you tip for carryout there?

I don't go to either one of those places...... not a factor

How do you tip when you are unemployed?

Just cuz I'm unemployed, doesn't mean I have no money.... my hubby works & the company I used to work for is still paying me severance...

just dont tip period, waiters/waitresses get paid anyways just like everyone else. Shit is to pricey anyways, and most larger restaurants take even a % of their tips, fuck em

Do you even know what a Waiter/Waitress gets paid?

They don't make crap.. and rely on tips. I have to have some pretty bad service for me not to tip... even if the food isn't up to par.. if the server does his/her part to make it right I tip pretty good.

I did some part time serving when I was younger and Waiters and Waitresses put up with alot of shit and still have to keep a smile on thier face and be cordial.

I work part time as a waitress at a sports bar/restuarant and I take to-go orders over the phone all the time. I place the order, pack it up when its finished and take the payment from the customer, but i dont really ever expect to get a tip for something like that. Occasionally, customers will tip for a to-go order, and that's nice but not expected by me anyway.

I have never tipped anyone on a carry-out order.

lmao what an idiot..

I think tipping should be outlawed. They should pay the waitstaff better and be done with tipping. If I go to a nice restaraunt, I expect good service no matter who waits on me. The whole idea of tipping is to let them know they did a good job. Well, if they don't do a good job, fuck up your order, and treat you like shit, they shouldn't be working there in the first place. I managed a restaurant for 3 years. The owner said that we were allowed to accept tips if we wanted to. I made it very clear to my employees that they were not allowed to accept tips regardless of what the owner said. I told him this flat out. Of his 4 eateries, mine was the only one that wasn't allowed to accept tips. My reasoning was that my waitstaff should provide excellent service every single time. So there was no need for the customers to show their appreciation, because excellent service was the norm for my place. If someone wasn't providing excellent service, I fired them. It was a very simple idea. Work hard, and get paid well. Work shitty, and I fire your ass.

I have, my sis has waited tables and said she has to prepare some takeout sometime and then give it to them. So its not like they just run and get it. If she;s cute 20% like normal.....I base a lot on if the girls is hot or not...Im not shallow just horny most of the time and love to see hot girls smile...

Do you tip on carry-out? I usually don't, but I have no idea what's appropriate. If you order from Outback, should you tip them, or not?

if you are eating Outback, you need to save every nickel you have.

Lol, thanks Matt. I used it as an example of a chain restaurant. Around here, the nicest place is not much better than that.

whats the point? I'm a solid tipper at a rest, but caryyout??? The cook should get the tip, not the chump that rings you up....cmon........

Well sat. night we spent a pretty good amount at the Hereford House, waitress comes out with salads and says real bitch like "ranch!" and slams the salad down in front of my wife and storms off. Then awhile later the mgr. is in the dining room and she starts acting all sweet. She got zilch, and I was sure to put a big ZERO in the gratuity column on the card ticket so the cunt wouldnt fill it in for me. Enjoy your top ramen diet bitch.

Well if they are good give them what you think they deserve, but its not required and no one should really make a big deal out of it (like those goobers who are obsessed with their "tip calculators" and whats the minimum/maximum---BAH HUMBUG I SAY! Fuck the fuckers

I am a leftist. I make more money than I need.
So it would be hypocritical for me not to pay a working man/woman if I can easily afford it.

But, in many trades, minimum wage is not valid. For Waiters and Waitresses, minimum wage does not apply because their tips can be legally considered as part of their compensation. Even IRS considers 15% to be standard.

After talking to many waitresses, I have realized that this is a well paid profession.
One waitress told me that she wanted to be a teacher. She said that it would pay her less, but she would like the job.

So my conclusion: Pay the expected 15% tip. But don't pay less than 15% unless the service was too bad.

If there is a 'hot' waitress, don't pay her more just because she was hot. She would laugh all the way to the bank on your stupidity.
If she was flirtatious with you, and thus provided extra service, give her more tip.
More pay for more service.

I had a question about Pizza Hut and Dominos. Someone 'sneered' that 'I don't go there'.
I love Pizza. But I have come to my conclusion. If I go to Pizza hut to pick up my carryout, the just pick it up and hand it over to me. No extra work. Tip totally optional.

I used to waitress I almost never tip below 15% good service gets 20-25%.

my girlfriend is a waitress at the cheesecake factory which is a decently expensive restaurant ..... so i know how to tip and i know how much waitresses expect.. i never tip below 20% no matter how shitty the service is unless there is something in my food.. because i believe in karma.. and i believe it will also make the waitress or waiter upset that they treated you so shitty and yous till tipped them that much.. tipping 15% on carryout is too much.. i say 2 to 5 bucks no matter how much total is..

To understand why we need tipping -- imagine a world w/o tipping.

Enjoy having your order taken by pedro.
