question for the sprinters

I am currentley doing interval training 3 monings a week to try and increase my overall speed. My current routine is 4x400m, 4x200m, 6x50m with a work to rest ratio of 1:3
I know this sounds like a stupid question but how do you breathe over the different distances ie. fast, slow and controlled, breath holding?
advice = K

Sounds like a pretty intense program you've got...

I do fartlek running (jog --> sprint --> jog --> sprint --> ....) once or twice a week and find it helps to focus on breathing IN heavily during the jog to obtain more oxygen and breathing OUT heavily during the sprint. Not sure whether that helps or how it would apply to the type of training you're doing though.

Any particular reason why you chose this routine?

When it comes to sprinting, breathing is a key component of optimal performance. As you're about to start each sprint, inhale. Then take off and exhale as you are accelerating. It's the equivalent of breathing in on the negative and breathing out on the positive when lifting. By the time you've exhaled, you'll be up to full speed and from there it's a matter of controlled slow breathing. Don't hold your breath and don't breath fast, this will cause your form to break down.

Thats what i was lookin for. Thanks for the advice. K 4 U.

If you are seriously interested about increasing your speed, you should consider adding some plyometrics and olympic-style lifting. If you would like some advise about either/both let me know.

Did you know that triple jumper Jonathon Edwards (under 70kg man) could clean 160kg!
