Question for Dr. Bermant

Bill S.

New member
Hi Doc.

I assume you have patients traveling to you from other states for gyno removal?

What happens in the case of an out-of-area patient if problems develop after surgery but the patient is already back home? What can the patient do?

Thanks!

Regards,

Bill

Typically, your Dr will either have you go to the E.R. if it is a severe problem, or will have you follow up for post op check ups with another local Dr. We have to do this occassionally with some of our patients, but we do Orthopaedic surgery rather than plastic surgery. Hope this helps you out.

Many patients go out of state or to other countries for special expertise in medical care. I myself have traveled for help from top medical specialists. Some doctors accept high risk patients from around the world needing a prolonged stay for complicated staged treatment.

I see many patients from around the world. Each patient is evaluated for risks of surgery and stay in Richmond after surgery depends on what needs to be done and the risks of having problems after surgery. The stay here can vary from the day of surgery to a week or more. For example, our Tumescent Tummy Tuck Abdominoplasty patients and Body Lift patients are asked to stay here in Richmond longer than our Gynecomastia Male Chest Sculpture. My Male Mastopexy Breast Lift Gynecomastia patients need to stay longer than the Dynamic Technique Male Chest sculpture patients.

Although I try to design techniques that minimize complications, no method is perfect and complications can happen. I ask that if any problems or questions happen, to call me immediatly so that arrangements can be made to take care of the situation. Sending a patient out of state to an emergency room might be an option, that has not happened yet in my practice. Almost all situations have been managed over the phone. Some issues are managed with follow-up here in Richmond. Rare situations have been managed by local doctors. Each situation is different, but fortunately problems after my sculpture have been very uncommon.

Hope this helps,

Michael Bermant, MD

It's generally a bad idea to use the ED as your follow-up for surgery done elsewhere. You should really have the surgeon performing the surgeon arrange for follow-up with another surgeon in your area. As an emergency physician, I can attest that the only things we treat or examine for "follow up" are things gone awry -- infections, dehiscence, etc.
