Question about trainers

Can someone tell me the protocol about trainers? I mean, do I tip them? Does the fee get paid directly to them or the gym and what is a normal price range?

Hi Nikki, I think it all depends on the situation and if they work for the gym you are training at or if they are freelance trainers paying a monthley fee to the gym. At my Golds there is a hired company that co0mes out and trains but there are also freelance trainers that have been there for years and get their clientel by word of mouth or who they might see and like his/her training style in the gym. The ones workong for the gym obviously get a portion of the pay and the gym gets the rest. Freelancers get whatever they are charging and then pay a monthly fee. I prefer the Freelancers because you can pretty much find one that trains with your specific goal in mind be it bodybuilding, more core orientated or sports specific training. Trainers can cost anywhere from 50/100 dollars depending on who it is and what they have accomplished through the years. I'm not sure about tipping myself. I take my trainer out to lunch every now and then and he does the same for me because we have become pretty good friends and do alot of hiking on the weekends and such. If I leave on vacation for awhile i will usually try and find him a gym shirt from wherever I go. I have found him one from Jamaica, Amsterdam, Holland,Cancun, Cabo etc. Hope this helps.

P.S. You have beautiful eyes (sorry just had to say)

90% of the time the fee (whatever it is) is too much cuz most traines are a joke.

If you live in North Jersey I can introduce you to the QUEEN of trainers. GUARENTEE you will accomplish your goals if you do what she says.

Amen. Good personal trainers are like needles in a haystack. Very difficult to find.

If you go with a trainer, be sure to ask a pertinent history from them. Are they certified? If so through whom are they certified? What is their educational background? High school diploma, any college? What is their personal sports/training background. Are they freelance or are they employed by the gym? How long have they been a trainer? Do they have any references? Any before and after success stories?

These questions are important because:

- If they are uneducated...., then they are uneducated.
- Their sports/training experience is important because you don't want some douche bag putting you through offensive lineman workouts he learned from his high school football coach. (you would be surprised how often this exact scenario happens)
- If they are employed by your gym, then the training plan they give you usually has to meet the gym's official guidelines, which the owner lays out. This is usually a generic "cookie cutter" workout plan designed to just keep the money rolling in. It is not specifically designed for the individual.
- Their nutritional knowledge is also important. Ask them how many calories THEY eat each day, and their macro-nutrient breakdowns. If they say something like "Oh..., I don't know it varies from day to day." seek advice elsewhere.
- Find out who they are certified through. ACE (American Council on Exercise) is preferred.
- And if they are a really good trainer, you won't have to look far for references. And no.., their parents and girlfriends do not count.

Also, make sure that the trainer "looks the part", and that their references also experience results that are along the line of what you are looking for. Hope this helps. Welcome to Elite.

WOW -- thanks SO MUCH for the great information. I'm so glad I asked this question. And yes, I am in NJ. NorthEast, about 10 minutes from NYCity. I'd love the contact info.

THANKS AGAIN all!!!!!!!!!

Much love, Nikki

Welcome and stay away from AS! haha Get in the womans forum asap! they will help u a ton!
Most trainers I see ( not saying all just most) don't help their clients at all. they work for them for 2-3 months and they look the same.
If we could get a few more Charles Glass' around that would be awesome!
Also look into the Omega Project here on Elite. Send Omega a PM or Frank about it or look around for it.
Gyms give out packages like 100 for 2 or 5 for 200 or something like that. Too much imo.
Omega is my training and that's it for now!
