Question about tears, injuries, knees

b fold the truth

Ok...my knee feels funny for lack of a better word.

On Saturday I squatted heavy for the first time ever. They wrapped my knees also and had full gear on me. Finished and felt fine. Did the overhead press, stones, and a heavy sled drag also. Ate with the guys, hung out a few more hours, and then drove 4 hours all the way home. No pain.

That night I felt something 'funny' in my leg. When I raised my knee up it felt like something was 'rolling' across my shin...maybe where the tib connects to the knee. Like a muscle 'rolling' from my outer upper right side of my calf (in front) across my shin and down to the other side to about midways. Not pain though...just a very freaky feeling.

On Monday I decided NOT to do standing overhead presses...so I did them seated. I also followed them up with some OL lifts with the thick bar...no pain. I put some tape across my shin where it felt funny with no problems.

Tuesday I still feel it. Some slight numbness in the area below my knee where my Patellar Tendon would be (sure hope it is still there). No real pain but feel strange still. I can feel a pull from hip flexor to mid shin when I raise my knee in any way.

Today...same thing. I don't plan on squatting tonight. My bicep tendons probably need the rest anyway...but I am pretty worried.

No swelling really, no bruise, not tender at all to touch in any place on my leg...but some slight numbness (from time to time) and still some very tight pulling around my knee and the 'rolling' feeling from before.

Started doing some research on the net and it has me worried about my MCL and my Patellar Tendon...

Any thoughts? I just thought that I'd have some immediate horrible pain, bruise, and would hurt like heck to even touch.

Thoughts?

Truthfully I would go straight to the doc if I were you. I have seen a lot of knee injuries and it has been my experience that when there is not a lot of pain but other symptoms arise like you are describing, there is usually a complete tear. Do you know how to test for instability? You should check lateral and front and back, this will give you a better idea as to weather it is your mcl, acl,pcl or what. Did you feel anything during the contest? Hell you could have just pinched a nerve by wrapping tight and going into a full squat, but you need an mri to tell for sure

any shifting of the joint?

i dunno man....I don't know what you mean by the "rolling feeling"....is it just a sensation, or is something actually happening there?

I never felt ANY pain at all...

My knees were wrapped TIGHT though...VERY tight.

I don't know how to check for stability. Heck...I was doing snatches, power cleans, clean and jerk, and overhead squats on Monday without pain...

Ughh...this turns my stomch 10 different ways just thinking about a tear or rupture...

Ever heard of going to the doctor?

Yes, but with no insurance and a non-abundance of money...it isn't usually the first thing that I think about.

I just emailed the IFSA-USA Physician...I hope that he gets back in touch with me asap.

I would just think that I would have some sort of pain...I mean I've had NONE. Am just hoping that the lack of sensation that I have in a spot or two is from lack of movement/exercise, there is a bone there, and maybe those muscles/tendons/ligaments never being worked or compressed like that before.

Those knee wraps were TIGHT...I dunno... Was hoping maybe just a bone bruise or something...

Everything that I read about a tear/rupture of the knee tendons said that it was accompanied by LOTS of immediate pain and I've never known anyone to have a tear/rupture without swelling and bruising.

to check for instability

i know guys that have played entire football games with a completely torn acl, the complete detachment usually severs the nerves as well and therefore the is not much pain, but you would be seeing some swelling and having trouble moving by now

Well that's why I don't even think of strongman training, you guys get injured way to much ( not that pl'ers don't either tho), besides see'ing a doc do light leg extensions and curls to get blood flowing in there, also the russians used small timed sessions on a trampoline-where they would judt lightly bounce in place, it will tighten up your knee area muscles and provide recovery also.

I disagree with seeing a doctor initially as he/she will simply say, "Are you in pain?", and maybe if their a specialist check for stability. There is no way they would refer you to get an MRI without saying, "Stay off for the next couple of days and see how it feels". I doubt you could even get an appointment with a specialist in a day or two. It may be a week before an opening and a family doctor is just that.

I agree with regards to damage and pain. I was thrown off a wave runner at extreme speeds and my ankle/foot got caught up in the foot slots and I felt the pain immediately even before I surfaced. Worst pain ever. By the time me and my brother made it back to shore my ankle was huge and hurt like a mother trucker!

I would take it easy for the next couple of days and see what happens with the pain and make a determination then as to whether to see a doctor.

Also, I'm sure somewhere on the internet is directions for how to safely check for the lateral stability of the knee area and then you could possibly check that yourself.

did you play basketball or jump having to reach something? if you remember jumping then coming back down on it the wrong way, that can definitely do it. i've done this a few times

Or in my case 6 years of soccer and a year of vball with a torn ACL:o

DBC, this happened when he tried to squat like a powerlifter...it never happened when he trained for strongman. lol

B, you're a pro now. People are looking for you to perform. If you were a race car driver, fans and sponsors would expect you to take good care of your car, or they would think twice about backing you. Part of your sponsorship money is to make sure the performer can perform optimally...that's YOU! If you were the average Joe I'd tell you to ice it, lay off, and see what happens. You're a Professional North American Strongman. Take care of the machine! At the very least ask around our St. Louis buddies and friends from Elite, and see if there's a doctor that will sponsor you with check ups. Find something...

I just tore my ACL, and I had no Pain at all!! IronLion is right, when you've completely torn a ligiment the nerves are gone, hense, No pain!!! I am not sure what to tell you, but I hope you recover quickly. Just keep in mind that if you did rip a tendon, ligiment ect... The longer you wait to get it checked out, the more damage you might do!!! Good luck b, Mike

i feel ya on that. those 80$ doctors visits sucks when you dont have insurance. i hope it gets better and isnt' anything serious. good luck man

I have Patella tendon problems, but my knee never feels unstable (it just hurts like a SOB just below the knee). I think you tore something. Like it or not, time to see the Doc.

Knee injuries are strange. Back in the mid 70s, football players would just be told that their knee was shot and couldn't play anymore (it was true, when they would try to make a cut their body goes one way and the knee went the other). But there wasn't any pain (they fell down instead). Most guys would just live that way rather than have those horrible scars and degeneration from surgery.......seems like only Namath was willing to get cut on over and over......

You live in a golden age for getting 2nd chances at sports.

im no doc but if you have no pain, have no swelling, have no discoloration, and can perform the same.......... i dont see how it could be a complete tear. I could see how someone could play a football game with a torn mcl........ easy - adrenaline.

but b your calm, any andrenaline is gone. if your still lifting oly style and ok......... i dont see how anything could be severed.

just my .02 cents.

if there was no inflamation it was probably nothing serious, b/c inflamation is the bodies first response to injury. Just keep it in check and be careful man

BFOLD..i just got PM"d about this..sorry to hear about the injury (which might not be that major but still--an injury)

I know you will be in the st. louis area. so maybe you could stop by my school's clinic. I know there are some free service clinics my school runs where us interns (students) do some work along wtih certified field doctors.

I'll PM you with my phone number and I'll do some research at my school for ya buddy.

peace

Yes it is!!! You're only 2 1/2 hours away, and I go to Eagle to train sometimes. I graduated from college there too! Used to live in St. Charles.

That was me almost everyday for 6 years. My body would go one way my knee the other. It'd get all tingly and weird and a few min I'd be out on the field playin again.

I'll bet money that you didn't really tear or rupture anything bro. You have no syptoms of those injuries. You said you have no real pain, which is a giant one, no swelling. I would get it checked out still, but rest easy b/c it more than likely not anything serious.

I got a reply from the IFSA-USA contracted physician today...

"Clint,

The hamstring tendons (there are three) come from low andbehind the thigh and
wrap around connecting to the tibia anteriolaterally (sort of side/ front).
The are at the knee joint line roughly. On the medial side there is a bursa
called pes ansurines which could become inflammed by heavy knee wraps. On the
lateral side there is certainly enough soft tissue that could be inflammed. At
any rate start icing 2 x/ day for twenty minutes, maybe take some Motrin and
make sure you have full range of motion. "

My stomach still turns just reading that...makes me not want to eat or do much...

What he described fits what I am experiencing completely. The bad thing is I will not be doing legs for a week or three...the good thing is that in another email he said that he did NOT have any reason to suspect a tear (due to lack of bruise/swelling). Being able to walk with only some stiffness was a good sign too.

I need to back off on squats and GM's for a few weeks and let my bicep tendons heal anyway...

B True

well thats a smart move. i'll pray for you, i'm sure you will be fine.

Ok, I'm going through exactly this right now. Try something clint, get in a chair with some rollers, or one of those stools that moves around on some balls at the bottom. Using only the leg in question, try and pull yourself accross the room by digging your heal into the carpet and pulling, using your hamstring. What does that feel like? Those hamstring tendons come right around on the medial side of your knee and connect on your shin. After my ACL reconstruction, mine burned. I have some slight tendonitis, which is what I think you have, and ice is totally the answer. Ice the crap out of it and try doing some healslides (lay on the bed and dig your heel into the bed, while sliding your heel toward your butt. If that bothers you at all, either the heel slides or the chair exercise I described, then Ice it down and just lay off of if for awhile.

That is EXACTLY when it hurts!!!!!

B True

You can also do heel slides by digging your heel into the hole on the approriate weighted barbell for your discomfort level, then drag it back to you as emptywallet suggested. I have done these for hamstring rehab before.

So we are thinking that it is nothing too serious???

B True

I'm thinking its totally tendonitis of those three hamstring tendons that come accross and connect in that insertion point where that bursa is in your shin. I had it so bad after my ACL reconstruction surgery a month ago that my shin would burn like fire if I tried to do a simple leg curl just standing up with no weight. I completely ingnored it as it was effecting my rehab and decided to just bear through it and its gotten better, HOWEVER, the chair thing still hurts me pretty bad, but it gets better as you do it. As I do the exercises, the pain goes away. Such as yesterday, I did the chair exercise for the first time. What I described to you. I thought I was going to die. But I made it all the way down the hallway and when I was coming back, the pain was going away and it was just hard in a strength sense. The heelslides used to kill me. However they don't at all anymore and I do them no problem, same with the leg curls, I do them with a 8 pound weight strapped pretty easily now and its not painful at all. I was just hard heading since it interferred with my rehab of my knee. Some people I think believe you should leave an area that has tendonitis alone, and just ice it 20 min on , 20 min off, as long as you can. I think they are going to do something to me where it produces heat deep in the tissue ( I forget the name) to promote healing. Its my conclusion its tendonitis. One thing, I'd like for you to talk to a guy who is the guru when it comes to things like this I think. He's over at Ulter and Macro's board, he a mod of the rehab section. His board name is killer and he's profoundly knowledgable when it comes to stuff like this. He's helped me a ton with my ACL surgery information, and helped me with a decision on choosing which graft I wanted. I trust him fully. He's as www.anabolicfitness.net and go to the rehab section of the board.
