question about rack deadlifts

110%

New member
today i did rack deadlifts for the first time and when i was setting up one of the lifters at my gym who is knowledgable told me to use an overhand grip for both hands on rack deadlifts since you are going so much more heavy than regular deadlifts, you have a large chance of tearing a bicep tendon if using the underhand, overhand approach....

just wondering waht you guys do with this exercise if u follow this reccomendation

From left field I`ll tell you that you use an over/under grip for added strength of your grip. Would`nt you need it more than ever if you`re doing rack deads?

if your using straps, it really doesnt matter. but i ALWAYS use over/under technique, and i never use straps.

i can vouch for the biceps tendon thing.....takes a long time to recover too.

i will be switching to overhand grip with straps for reps....

i'll strengthen my grip doing other shit.

That's pretty much how I feel about it.

I've pulled 575lbs from knee height, and I've never had any bicep problems. I would keep the same grip you plan to pull full ROM deads with.

How do you figure? (Honestly curious.)

Joker,

The mixed grip is an excellent grip to use. When you get to the heavier weights, a hell of a lot of stress is placed on the bicep tendon (the arm with the underhand grip). There have been cases of trainers tearing their biceps using an underhand grip. I try to play it safe. . . .of course this is my opinion.

the only time people have torn their bicep deadlifting with an underhand grip is becuase they were not long arming the deadlift. in other words, instead of just letting the barbell hang..... they were flexing every muscle, including the bicep... and since there is no way that arm can curl the deadlift weight........ bye bye bicep.

andy bolton just deadlifted the like 925-930lbs with an over under grip off the floor at the Arnold Classic and didnt tear anything........

so i think you;ll be ok with the mixed grip. i like practicing how im actually going to perform the lift.
