Question about face pulls

Doomsday

Which way is the proper way to do face pulls The other day my PT had me try both grips:

This way (overhand grip) kills my bad shoulder, I feel it in the upper arm. Possibly referred pain from having a weak rotator cuff:

This way (neutral grip) doesn't kill my shoulder but I'm not sure if it's the right way to do face pulls:

Is doing it the second way (the neutral grip that doesn't hurt) a good way of doing face pulls so I can work my upper back/rear delts?

doing something that you know 'kills' your bad shoulder = stupid

if you think it is because you are weak, then next time try less weight and find out

I do them the first way and my rear delts grew a lot when i got my form right. I get a great rear delt pump with those. Pull the weight into your forehead and focus on using the rear delts to pull your elbows back in a "sweep" or arc.
