question about deadlifting..

I read up on Tnation about deadlifting and it said that the knees should be BEHIND the bar along with the shoulders, but you should find what place the hips are closest to the bar. They say that you must pull the bar up and back and that it is NOT at all an olympic lift where you start the bar at the shins. well in the starting strength book, they say that the deadlift is best when the knees are somewhat past the bar nearly touching the shins about 2 - 4 inches or something (i'm guessing an olympic lift setup..maybe?) can someone explain to me what is right and what is wrong?

EDIT: nevermind the 2-4 inches, the Starting strength book says they should be touching the shins.

bump for your answer...
personaly my knees go just slightly over the bar... sholders over a hair too... touching shins of course... scraping them the way as i pull... i have had many comment on my form as 'very good'... but take that as you like...

Bump.

Thanks professor, that's what i've been reading on this site as well as in Starting Strength. I just remember seeing in an article about powerlifters having hips closest to the bar but shoulders and knees behind it.

OL's pull differently with shoulders over or in front of the bar. Not sure if that was your question.

that was half of it. Do you know about normal deadlifts? if they should start out like an olympic lift (bar very close to shins or body) or differently?

You can deadlift however you want. Most PLs tend to sit further back - some don't. Find what works for you and your body structure.
