Pushups

On saturday I did 3 sets of pushups, 40, 20, 20, mainly just to get a feel for what my body could handle - and I'm still relatively sore from that. However, I feel the soreness all over. It never occurred to me, but where would I put pushups in a training program? What day would I put that in for? Frankly, I feel like they work a lot of areas, particularly my chest. I definitely would like to include them in my workout. However, I'm not sure where to substitute them in, or what to take out.

They require no equipment. And they're probably decent for conditioning. The army doesn't want to make a bunch of bodybuilders or powerlifters.

The army is such an advocate of push-ups and other bodyweight exercises, because they want you to be lean, and well conditioned. They want their troops to have endurance more than anything else. Thus the high repetitions and intense running regimens.

ingram dude on here does pushups with 3x45 plates on his back *gasp* he's also a BIG guy

yeah the point is he does them weighted. You can only get so big or strong without loading parameters. Ingram use of pushups is weighted hence overload of bodyweight adaptation. They are not a bad form of excercise they just can only go so far. Sport science has come so far, so use all the best tools you can
