Is it a good idea to perform push ups before going to bed?

Will it do any good for your muscles?

Does is make it more difficult to fall asleep?

Let's get a good discussion going on this, Bros!

i personaly think this is something that was introduced to motivate begining weight trainers and strength training

dont think its something for more advance trainers and athletes

I agree its more for people who do not exercise and need some way to get in a form of training.

If you want significant gains it is essential you begin a lifting regimen.

well I have talked to some guys that were in the army and they said that is how they suggest keeping pushup counts up, just do a solid slow controlled set of 50 every night. When I was younger that was how I would workout before I started lifting.

also I have 2 friends, one never does many pushups and cant do them well. the other likes doing pushups and can do 50 solid. Well the first friend can barely bench 155 after a few weeks training, within a couple sessions the other friend was benching 190, or 10 pounds over his bodyweight. There's something to be said for pushups

I credit the many pushups I have done since childhood for my solid chest.
Chest is my best body part and other than genetics there is no other explanation for it.

Lol genetics is the explanation for it.

Pushups growing up are not going to change muscle insertion points.

That said getting used to using your chest muscles from pushups before actually lifting is probably beneficial.

it could be worked into strength training. many athletes have use seriously high volume bw training with success. body building is another story.

Push ups are for sissies... go with dips!

lmao try doing 25 pushups, sprinting a lap, then doing 25 pushups, 25 situps, and 30 seconds of flutter kicks and repeating till you get to 2 miles. See who is the sissy then:evil:

^ This kind of high-intensity exercise is grueling. I used to do this when training Krav Maga. It was always much more fatiguing than weight training.

I know right? I am doing this at least a few days a week now because I'm training for the army rangers and all they care about is endurance endurance endurance....although that is changing a little because with helicopters who needs to run 10 miles:p:D But yeah if anyone wants good "entertaining" cardio ideas this is what I'd recommend. Much funner than running by itself and if you can get up to 2 miles with 1:30 per 1/4 mile and 50 pushups, 50 situps, and 1:00 minute flutter kicks, after each lap, with no rests, you will be in baller shape.

also excellent is the "100 pullups" workout where you repeat:

as many pullups are you can do
max pushups in 1 minute
max situps in 1 minute
optional: run 1/4 mile 1:30

repeat till you get to 100 pullups

Of you can that without rest and get to 100 in 5 sets......you're going to be in damn good shape

That's hardcore!.
I stopped training that way in 2007 because I simply couldn't put on muscle mass with all that cardio.

That's basically all that training is. Grueling cardio.

That said, doing 5 sets of 5 with really heavy ass weight on squats and limiting your rest on sets can be absolutely BRUTAL.

There's a difference between being in a state of oxygen debt and pushing some weight that is taxing your nervous system big time while you feel like yur gonna pop a blood vessel on the last rep.

Both are hard.

You could if you want to and see if it makes a difference.

yeah both are hard, but I'm going to have to say in general anything endurance (hard runs, shit ton of pushups, etc) is harder. I've done some hard ass 20 rep squats, hard ass deadlift sets, etc, and nothing compares to a brutal cardio. With lifting the pain ends quicker and you take a rest, however short it many be. Not so with a hard run. That's why your body releases so many more endorphins during running because it needs them to get through it. I agree about the cardio though I havent been doing nearly enough but I am so worried about losing strength and mass because of it:(

From your post: "I agree about the cardio though I havent been doing nearly enough but I am so worried about losing strength and mass because of it:("

If you are naturally lean then it is almost impossible to do lots of cardio and maintain muscle. But with the correct amounts of calories, rest, and AAS (if that's your thing) then you can maintain a great physique even with all the cardio.

never really got into pushups but after 4 months of lifting i could do 60 diamond pushups with elbows touching my hips. but hte times i did em before bed i got pumped up and couldnt sleep so didnt seem like a good idea. maybe if you do em like 2 hours before bed youll be tired by then and lose your 'high' from working out.

There's a famous saying, ""Fatigue is the best pillow".

Maybe doing pushups 2 hours before bed could create fatigue for a more restful sleep.

It was weird for me when I did pushups and situps and stuff before bed I would feel tired instantly and go right to sleep? Not so now when I do a full workout though

It's difficult for me personally, to tell whether or not pushups before bed help or hinder sleep.

There is the question of sleep quality as well.

I'll tell you one thing though, I'm on cycle right now and I feel like I need to do pushups before bed because my muscles are craving the exercise :sleep2:

Question about pushups in general::::::::: do you guys feel they are worth having in a routine? I remember reading somewhere that they are a really underrated exercise.

I'm glad this is a poll question. We are still receiving votes after 12 days.

I've stopped doing my nightly pushups, but now exercise more days per week than I used to.

I'm doing HST, which calls for 3 lifting sessions per week.

I'm now doing 3 lifting sessions per week + 3 high intensity cardio sessions.

i get someone in ym gmy to stack plates on my back

i place my feet on a bench press when i do pushups to make it harder

then have someone place the plates on my back

u can easily fit over 5-6 plates on your back, after that starts becoming a struggle

Sounds like something good to try.

I've decided against it

I need to fit in my pushups situps flutterkicks etc so last night I did some before bed and this morning I did some right when I got up....we'll se if I make a habit out of it though. I need to be doing pushups, situps, pullups etc 5 days a week though for endurance

im still waiting for Tblock or Extramile to post a video of some guy doing ridiculous amount of weight with this exercise, e.g weighted pushups with 200kg on his back,

jus like they do in every thread and destroy my pride in all my lifts lol HAHA

I'd like to see that
