push press question

I like push presses, but they just feel like "cheating." I imagine you can put more weight up that way, but in particular, what benefit do push presses give that OHPs do not?

While struggling near the end of a set of militaries, I was thinking - I should just push-press these last two up. Good idea? Bad idea?

Depends. I imagine you are doing militaries for increased strength, right? Force x distance. Now, if you were to perform push presses you're bringing power into the equation. Force x distance / time. You could really separate these into 2 types of training. However, I see nothing wrong with getting those last 2 reps with a little bit of cheat action. :) Most importanty, stay safe and under control.

I think it's a great way to finish off a Mil Press session. You will always be able to get a couple of push presses out at the end of your Mil set, so why not??

When I am doing push presses...I push press it.
When I millitary press...I strict press it.
When I jerk it...I jerk it.

They are three different exercises...

Well...I like to clean it first...and work with the snatch a little.. Helps me get ready for the jerk.

I'm with B fold:

when I perform military presses: that's what I do

when I perform push presses: that's what I do.

One or the other in a session; never both.

I especially like push presses; feel they're more rewarding. Trust me, after training with nothing more than static strength; you will find the more "explosive" exercises more difficult at first. Until you get the form right.

I do like the more explosive exercises more. Not only are they more fun, but they are harder.

It's all about bar speed. And maintaining the control as you explode that weight up.

Here's something that will help in getting you use to push presses. Begin with the bar sitting in the rack - like you're about to perform regular military presses from pins. BUT, once you lower the bar to your upper chest, hold for a count of 3, then explode up; MINUS leg drive.

We do 4x6. We've also been doing this with our bench. Wow. Anyways, this will help in preparing your triceps for that explosive power.

Another thing about push presses; I see it almost like a dance. A dance that takes a awful lot of coordination; besides explosive power. So, don't think of it as cheating. It's a great exercise.

Thanks all. I know that the push press is a different exercise, I needed some specifics on what its benefits are. So far, it sounds a bit like the difference between regular bench press and speed bench.

Thanks for the detailed info slinky. I've done explosive moves before. I've just not been able to find info on how they benefit the body other than making you good at that particular move. I'll try the PP for a couple of reps without the leg drive to see how it feels in the upper body.

Ms Bev - I think you hit the nail on the head: I should go heavier (once I get used to the move, of course). Whenever I've done them, its been with OHP weight. No wonder it feels like just cheating the weight up.

hmm.... I always liked cleaning AFTERWARDS.....

push press just allows your legs to help you get past the sticking point so, basicly you get more work in the lockout area.

Also depending on how much leg drive you have, I read about some olylifter who can only press 125lbs but pushpress over 300lbs :)
