Pullovers?

Can someone please explain this exercise to me? I know it is for your back but I can't seem to figure out what theses are exactly.

Maybe I am confused with calling these something else?

I did a search for this but came up with the word "pull over" in numerous threads.

Thank you in advance, karma for a good answer, link or description. :)

Your lats do a portion of the work to move the weight from the position of laying on your back, arms extended above your head, parallel to the floor, to the position above your body with your arms out in front of you.

You can also do them standing, with a cable.

While I understand that the lats do get worked with the movement, I never felt it was a very effective lat excersize. There are tons of other stuff that is both more effective and effecient (IMO).

This is an exercise that won't get a lot of mass on you or maky your lats flare out, but is GREAT at working the serratus anterior muscles. I've done them for a few years and have seen big improvements in mine. Don't try moving a ton of weight though, this is about FEELING the muscle work, not recruiting other muscles.

Dumbell pullovers don't really do it for your back... but the pullover machine is a whole different animal. Some people think the pullover machine is the single biggest mass builder for back there is. (Dan Duchaine called it the "squat for backs.")

I've torn out my left hand and biceps... so the only back exercise I can currently do it the pullover machine... check back in a couple months and I'll tell you how it goes.

i just started doing pull overs, i heard along with bench they are good for increasing the general size of your chest/upper body. they frigging burn my triceps too.

honestly, i did them a lot as a kid, 10-14. I think doing them as i went through my growth spurts made my lats and delts really wide. Others swear by them as a width exercise. I could be totally wrong, but its just something i noticed.

They are a support lift. I prefer to do them on a situp bench and, as you pull the weight over head, perform a situp at the same time. I think the pullover situp is an important part of the "body is one peice" idea.

i do them at the end of back (well almost i leave deadlifts last) and i use it to really stretch the lats. i compare to flyes for chest.

Good exercise if you are already doing chins and rows and deads and powercleans and still feel like you need more!

stupid exercise imo most people dont do them right and it jus puts a lot of strain on you. SO many other lifts
