What is more beneficial when doing chin-ups ?

High reps (12-20) with bodyweight only
Low reps (less than 8) with added weight
 
Lower reps with weight added. Shoot for the 8-12 range. I don't think it's going to make too much of a difference. High or low reps, as long as there's progression in resistance.

Use a wider grip to emphasize the lats more.
 
Personally I think added weight is more beneficial. if you can do 12 chin-ups with 70lbs strapped to you then I know that you can easily get 15-18 reps with bw.
