prednisone ..

The Mighty Fez

New member
i know this is kind of out there. but has anyone ever used prednisone, and for what. im not in any way suggesting cycling, but i had asthma several years ago and they gave it to me and i broke out all over the place and put on about 10 pounds or so over the duration of the prescription and ate like a horse.

just curious if anyone has ever tried to use it for the hell of it.

Bump. This stuff wont build any muscle. Been on and off for several years. All I got out of it is this terrible taste and some facial bloat. It is also very powerful, in which case you must ween off of it.

i never said it was. i was only interested to know if ppl had taken it and for what. like i said, i had asthma. re-read my post. im not trying to illicit any other responses than what i originally asked in my post. no, its not anabolic, but yes, it is a steroid.

chill, yo :)

My Doctor Prescribed it for me when I had a chest infection
As far as I know it is a corticosteroid ( not what I want to be taking!!!)

Fortunately I was only on it for about a week or 2

VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY BAD idea.
A shit load of long term complications.
I had to take it long time ago for bad allergies. It redistributes fat from your arms and legs to your stomach. My arms and legs have no fat at all, I have a third chin, and inspite of being skinny, have love handles.
You only gained water weight.
It's actually catabolic. It decreases your muscle mass and thins out your bones.

Nope. It's a cortico-steroid (i.e., anti-inflammatory). And, if I'm not mistaken, if taken for a long enough period of time, it's actually catabolic (i.e., muscle-wasting) rather than anabolic.

Do not use prednisone any way not prescribed by a MD.

I've taken massive doses of this stuff since Janurary. What it has done to me is horrendous. I lost a ton of hair, I broke out, gained lots of fat and I have a lot of water retention.

corticosteroids (inti inflamitory) in general are catabolic, and promote fat storage, but are very nessecary for some medical conditions. Use only as directed by physician, never any other time.

There are many types of steroids. Corticosteroids, Anabolic steroids, etc. Prednisone is not an anabolic steroid!

And even question a doctor's reasoning behind prescribing it to you. I will be going to med school next year and have been around some great doctors but a lot of stupid ones as well. So make sure your doctor gives you an explanation as to why he would put you on such a harsh drug. If he tries to bullshit you it's time to find a better doctor. Remeber, drugs aren't the answer to all problems, but they can be useful at times. Just my 2 cents.

I was on it for about 7-10 days when I injured my back - it was prescribed to cut swelling of an injuried disk. I read in the literature that came with my script that it can cause gyno.

I have to use it every now and then for my crohn's. I took high doses from this past january till this june and it ate muscle like crazy and made me fat as well. It did make me eat alot but with not being able to exercise you just gain fat. Great for taking down swelling though.

Its a CORTICO-steroid. Its an ANTI-inflamatory and hence why it was used for your asthma. Corticosteroids are very detrimental to overall health, they greatly hamper the immune system and the anti-inflamatory effects slow healing and the building of muscle, its very catabolic.

anabolic steroids must be distinguished from other types of steroids, such as cortical steroids. Anabolic steroids include testosterone, which is nature’s own anabolic steroid, plus about 50 or 60 other compounds that are copies of testosterone or variations on the testosterone molecule. By contrast, the types of steroids that your dermatologist gives you for poison ivy or the steroids that you would take in an inhaler for asthma are cortical steroids, which are copies of cortisone. They are made by the adrenal gland, not to be confused with testosterone and its relatives. Cortical steroids do not promote muscle gains at all, in fact, they can cause a slight loss of muscle mass.

I gave you a LOGICAL repsonse in my first post :)

But you had to act like a child with me... :o
YOU asked and I QUOTE "just curious if anyone has ever tried to use it for the hell of it"

And NO, noone here is dumb enough to use just for the hell of it , but maybe you can and then please report back with some of the horrid results of what it does to your body :worried: :D

oh wow. you alright, buddy?

so what, i wanted to know if anyone took it. big f'in deal. deal with it.
You really shouldnt be so harsh with the Platinum Members....remember we are guest here. You got an answer to your question....you should follow some of your own advise and deal with it.

i took it for 4 years to treat a blood disorder, ITP. i ate like a mother fucker. i didnt gain any water weight like most people or get fat at all. i jsut worked out like normal and my weight went up slowly. about 75 pounds in 4 years.

anyway, my doctor said its a steriod, but not anabolic so i wont get mood swings or rage, but i will eat more and maybe get a bit of heart burn. i started on 100 mg and tapered down every 2 weeks to 5 mg eod. my blood is fine now. :)

holy shit! 4 years. how long were you kept at 100mg, and at what point did u taperdown? i took it for several weeks at a moderately low dose and broke out all over my back, all over my ass, shoulders etc. it was absolutely horrible. looked like i had f'in chicken pox or something.

so were u at 100 for 3 years and the last year u tapered? becuz if you tapered from 100 to 0 that would take about 50 weeks at 2 week intervals and a 5 mg drop per two weeks. is that correct?

no, it was more like, 100 mg for 2 weeks, then 80, then 60, then 40, down to 5 mg. there were times i didnt take it. ive been off since HS so about 3 years.

but when i took it, i mostly was on 5 mgs. when i got off totally, i got a gut and luve handles.. it sux cock

Where can I buy some of this stuff?! :lmao:

ok. phew. i was trippin.i couldnt fathom how your md would subject you to such a high dose for such a prolonged period of time. especially since corticosteroids can sometimes mask some signs of infection, and new infections can appear during their use. if you were on like i thought, you'd probably be blind by now haha.

actually it aids your immune system, thats y i had to take it
I beg to differ. It reduces inflamation and thats its primary function. Read any drug info liturature and it will tell you.....

"This drug makes you more susceptible to illnesses. If you are exposed to chicken pox, measles, or tuberculosis (TB) while taking prednisone, call your doctor. Do not have a vaccination, other immunization, or any skin test while you are taking prednisone unless your doctor tells you that you may."

all i know is, ITP is an auto immune disease where the immune system attacks the platelets. prednisone corrected that by calming the immune system down.

i dont remember gettin sick alot, but i do remember healing slowly from cuts and things like that. i still kinda do.

Prednisone works by blocking and inactivating your immune system. It kills the immune system.
It is complicated but allergies, asthma and autoimmune conditions are caused by overactive immune system or misdirected attacks of immune system. Immune system may attack foreign tissue like transplanted organs. Prednisone kills immune system to prevent these effects.

Probably you have heard about stress hormone Cortisol. Prednisone is a stronger form of cortisol.

Very common Complications: Stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, bad cholestrol, thinning of bones, decrease in muscle mass, increased risk of infections, Psychiatric problems.

THIS THREAD SHOULD NOT BE ON THIS BOARD.
