Post Cardio

Should I do a shake here? Or just eat regular food?

Currently cutting, doing about 500 cals burned during cardio session, wondered if which was better. I am also lifting in the evenings and having a PWO with dex/malto afterwards.

Best time to do cardio is when you wake up in the morning on an empty stomach. A small protein shake with no carbs at the most. This will trick your body into burnig off fat store as energy. I would take in a protein shake after cardio but if you do it in the morning you should be eating breakfast about half hour after.

Im aweful at doin cardio first thing in the morning, makes me feel like garbage. I usually get up around 11, eat a no-carb breakfast, go to class, and do cardio around 2:00

Why would you have a no-carb breakfast? Breakfast is the best time to get in your starchy carbs. Remember, you are fueling for your upcoming activities ......

Do the cardio on an empty stomach. Take BCAA's, do your cardio, and then eat your first meal. Don't take a pwo shake such as dextrose and whey after cardio. It's too high glycemic and your blood sugar will drop quick.

I do a no carb breakfast so I dont have any carbs in my system before I do cardio

Yea, effectively my stomach is empty by the time I get to cardio, I give 3-4 hours to digest my breakfast, but I dont think it would be good to not eat anything until 3-4 in the afternoon....

Not possible onthis schedule - he has already said that.

He gets up at 11, does cardio at 2pm.

If you eat breakfast at 11am with starchy carb, then do cardio 3 hours later, your stomach will - essentially - be empty. Then, after cardio, eat a real meal.

If you want to get big you gotta eat a big breakfast. And if you want to get ripped you gotta do your cardio on an empty stomach before breaky.

No pain no gain brotha!

I guess I was curious about how long the carbs stay in my system and what effect that they would have on fat burning, even if they were consumed a few hours earlier...... but if Im safe, thats great news, I'm gettin sick of eggs and meat for breakfast ;)

Dude, big breakfast=big gains. There are no short cuts in bodybuilding. 50% effort=50% gains. 100%effort=100% gains.

Lets get serious!!

Well, there are alternatives... he can also do his cardio right after weights... I used to do this. The problem is that you have to be ready to spend 2 hours in the gym...

Naw, really dont have the time for that, the University's gym closes at midnite, i usually lift about 10:30p.m. - close

How long do you do cardio? How many days a week? What do you do for cardio?

Plus, lifting for 90 min? What is your split like? You need to trim down your workout ..... Sounds like too many reps and sets ......

More is not better ..... it is smarter to decrease the time, and increase the intensity ...

No way bro. This would be over-training. His cortisol levels would be thru the roof and he would be in a catabolic state. Train for up to an hour max. Do cardio and weights at least 4 hours apart.

Cardio usually goes for 30 mins, i've been doin it 4-5 days a week, i usually spend 20 mins on bike sometimes HIIT, sometimes steady-state, then I'll run 2 miles on treadmill

Yea, I usually spend 1h to 1h15mins at the gym. Place is usually a little crowded so there's sometimes a wait for weights and benches. I usually do 4sets of 2reps + 1 warmup set for each area.

It worked for me, I dropped 53 lbs (50 lbs fat, 3 lbs LBM) in 5.5 months doing exactly that. I would have a monster PWO (Whey Isolate, Dex and Malto) right after Cardio (actually in the showers) and then go home and have my dinner... This is not hypothetical as I like to recommend things I know work and I have tried on myself.

I recently changed to a split programs and so far it SUCKS big time... I am already thinking how to get back to something like I was doing before.

Exactly my point bro. You didnt gain any muscle mass you actually lost some. Training like this is not good for a bodybuilder. It would be better for an endurance athlete.

This orginial poster is not in a bulking phase right now - he is looking to cut.

Many people do weights then cardio - not just endurance athletes. Actually, endurance athletes rarely do weights anyway.

Ideally, weights and cardio are done in separate sessions. But sometimes, that simply CANNOT be done. All our schedules are different, and simply, some people don't want to hit the gym 2x a day.

In those cases, doing weights FIRST, then cardio is the best option. Then, after cardio, drink the normal PWO shake. Some people will drink a protein only shake after weights, but before cardio ..... can depend on your body.

Also, just as I posted my last repsonse I forgot to add this .....

Muscle loss is inidividual. There is no way you can say for sure he (or anyone) would lose muscle doing weights and cardio in the same session.

For example, I am a hard gainer. But once I gain the muscle, my body holds onto it like no tomorrow. My body hates losing anything - muscle OR fat! SO I can do long sessions of training with no muscle loss repercussions. Hell, I stopped doing weight for my legs - and STILL have plenty of muscle on them AND have definition. That is simply my genetics.

This guy might be the same way. You cannot make a blanket statement that he will definately lose muscle mass. He needs to try things, see what works for him. If he tries a long session of weights and cardio and finds that it is not working for him, then he'll figure something else out. This is what we ALL have to do. :)
