Portable/Stand Alone Air Conditioning Units

Anyone use a portable air conditioner? Dorms here don't allow window A/C's, and it's always too bloody hot 24/7. No central air or anything either.

Do the stand-alone A/C's work very well? Compared to a window unit? For ~$350, I would like a better idea before shelling out the cash.

i dunno how peeps lived here in nawlinz before air conditioning.......musta drank a LOT of mint julips.

Radar: yes, they are stand up. I don't know if they use water or not. Their most common function is for rooms/offices without windows.

Rnch: most midwest universities don't allow A/C in their rooms. Most don't have any air at all.
