Pool Question?

Would it be smart to go to the pool about 30min. - 1 hr. 30 min. after a workout? I was thinking about this, I want to go to the pool but I was wondering how it would affect muscle growth. I have a feeling that it would actually be beneficial, but I know you guys have the true advice.

Not after the workout because you need to eat post workout. But on your off days it's great, probably the best combo there's it's swimming and lifting, I would do it if I had the chance.

I used to live at the ocean, I eat and swim at the same time, yah I'm that hard core:p, but I wasn't really going to swim, I was going to just sit in the cold water, I figured it would be good for relaxing my muscles after a stressful workout and help muscle growth, but I know a lot in weightlifting is counter-intuitive, so any idea?

Also yah, I know it is the best cardio, but should I be doing that while I'm trying to bulk? I'v been doing medium to low intensity cardio on tread.

It is great! Keep it at medium intensity, swimming increases appetite, something that's good for bulking don't you think :supercool plus it helps relaxing, isn't it convincing enough?

Well, thats enough coaxing for me... the swimming pool has just become a part of my daily routine!

do you plan on swimming laps or just relaxing in the pool?

Not to splash cold water on your idea, but Eastern Europeans use this technique for their woman weightlifter so that they dont get muscle growth:

After the execution of weight training, women athletes have to spend not less than 20-30 minutes for relaxation. That aims at both quicker recuperation and meeting aesthetic requirements. As a result of a heavier workout muscle hypertrophy occurs: since the muscles are filled in with blood, their length having been decreased after the heavy work. This state of the muscles reduces the joints amplitude as a consequence to which woman's movements become clumsy and awkward. The many repetitions of this state transform the woman's figure, it acquires the manners of a man. This has an impact not only on the woman herself but on the sport she trains also. That is why relaxation exercises have to be attached with the same importance as to loading ones. In this relation, both water massage and swimming are considered to be most suitable.

I don't know, though. IMO a little water never hurt anybody. Maybe a few easy laps to keep the blood flowing to play it safe.

I respect the pun... that sucks, I love swimming, but look how beastly Micheal Phelps and many of the other swimmers look, he is 6'3" and 200 pounds, thats not bad for his muscle definition. I guess I'll stick to the treamill:worried:

Swim on off days then. That quote posted was about relaxation "after the execution of weight training" on your rest days swimming will burn fat, build muscle and man o man does swimming make you hungry

If you are bulking you don't want to expend too many calories swimming in the pool, however, you also want the cardiovascular activity to build the support system your muscles need. If I had a pool I would swim instead of do treadmill but don't overdo it. If your diet is right (i.e. a lot of high quality protein and calories) quality you should be able to swim about as much as you want

as someone whose seen the best (natural) physiques from those who train for a sport, id say go for it.

you obviously have to eat for whatever you are doing, but the greater your workload at whatever you are doing, the more adaptation your body has to undergo.

you may not have a huge bodybuilder look, if you incorporate swimming into your off days, but you will still be able to be strong, big, and lean (depending on diet).

look at the fighters (boxing, wrestling, juijitsu). male gymnasts and break dancerrs have rediculous bodys as well.

i hate to use the cliched advice of "experiment a little and see how it affects you", but thats really the only way you can be certain as to how you would react
